hey guys. i'm going hunting with my brother in law next year and i decided to start saving as much money as i can to buy a rifle. i was going to get the remington 770 but i know a guy who has one and he said it isnt as good as he was hoping.

i heard savage makes good quality rifles. i was trying to decide between the 111 fxp3 (composite stock and comes with scope) and the 110 gxp3 (wood stock and comes with a scope). what are the main differences between these not counting the composite and wood stock and the raised comb on the second rifle? also if you own one please let me know what you think of it. thanks

Buds has both and the price difference is only about $30. I'm not sure what the differences are, aside from what you pointed out (wood vs composite stock, and the 110 gxp3 has a raised comb). According to the Savage site, both rifles have an internal magazine.

Hopefully someone with more experience can chime in. Idk what the standard differences are between the 110 line and 111 line.

[QUALITY/B] is the difference in the 770 class. Savage has proved out of the box accuracy to win titles.

I'm a big fan of savage but if it's just the standard synthetic stock then get the gxp3. I replaced the synthetic stock on mine, and it made a world of difference (too flexible). You'll like the raised comb (probably, I'm not you). Most people dislike scopes that come on rifles because most scopes that come on rifles are cheap; but scopes are easily replaceable and you may get lucky and end up with something that works.

ETA: you are right to avoid 770's. Just terrible.

First off, welcome to the forum.

Second, what kind of budget do you have for your planned rifle purchase?

Also, do you have a particular cartridge in mind?

I have very few complaints with Savage rifles. (I have three Savage rifles). The "flimsy" stock seems to get the most attention. No matter though, the one Model 11 with the flimsy stock shoots 1/2" groups, so does that mean I really don't have a complaint? Probably.

As others have said, the scopes that come with the packages are well... poor quality... but if you can save up even another $150-$200 you can get something halfway decent, like a Redfield for ~$150 or a Burris Fullfield II on sale. But maybe the package deal can get you through a season or two while you save some money for a nice scope, and there's nothing wrong with that.

You can get the 10/110FXP3 from Walmart (the model is exclusive to Walmart and not listed on the Savage website but it is for all intents and purposes a 11/111FXP3) for around $200 less than you can get the package gun anywhere else. It's cheaper than the same rifle without a scope, in fact at $397. Keep the bases and rings and put a good scope on tip and you'll have about the most affordable quality hunting rig going.

The 770s arnt "THAT" bad...they are generally accurate, clumsy, harsh, ugly, but accurate

I would get what ever savage is cheaper, the standard wood stocks aren't all that nice. If you want wood your best off getting an aftermarket stock. As for the scopes, i still use the simmons 8 point i got with my .243. It ISNT a great scope, but its honestly pretty good (if your ok with folks telling you to go buy a more expensive scope all the time). The scope has proven reliable, and of decent enough quality to make it the one i generally use for an initial test on a new rifle.

I'll second helotaxi.I have three savages a 11 in 223 a 16 in 7mm08 and 116 in 300 win mag all have flimsy plastic stocks and all shoot great. The package deals i have seen with cheap scopes dont cost much more than a bare rifle so your not realy loosing if u dont like the scope.The rings and bases alone are will cost you 40-50 bucks.Toss the scope and use the rings to mount a leupold or burris and you have great combo p.s. savages website shows new package guns with nikon scopes

I would save some money and get a howa or weatherby s2. I love savage but I've found the howa's and weatherbys to be just as accurate and much less expensive. I would go for a weatherby s2 and redfield revolution scope.
