I had a .257 Roberts Ack. Imp. built on an old Mauser around 1993 and it was a tack driver. Unfortunately I got very inconsistent neck and shoulder length and neck thickness when fire-forming. I suspect this is because the smith (despite my explicit written instructions) did not set the headspace 0.004" short of GO to get the proper Ackley crush fit on standard brass that allows the case to headspace properly and grow without excess brass flowing into the neck. I was able to get the case length consistent by setting the bullets for fireforming forward and headspacing off the lands, but never solved the neck issues. I probably could have gotten similar results lubing the cases before fireforming (the case length issue coming from the fact that the low taper Ackley cases have low bolt thrust--can be as low as zero).
I recently built a Savage and the simplicity and inherent adjustability of it got me thinking that this would be a perfect platform for Ackley Improveds.
I did a little Googling and found that short AI GO gauges are available (use the standard GO as a NO GO).
Have any members here built AIs on the Savage platform?
