Really hoping I'm putting this in the correct section, if not my apologies. Looking at MDT chassis systems, some of them list the Savage Short Action (SA) but not the Axis and only a couple they list both the short action and Axis. Is there a mounting difference between the Savage 10 and the Axis for these or as long as it's a short action it'll work? Asking this because I may end up getting is rid of my Mossberg 800a .308 and want to replace it with a more customized .308.

My plan is to build a rifle off of a Savage barreled action in .308, dropping it in to a MDT Tac21 Gen 2 chassis. Using it for deer hunting and maybe try my hand at long range target shooting. I had thought of 6.5 Creedmoor, but the low barrel life isn't appealing to me, plus I already have quite a bit of .308 ammo on hand.

Contacted MDT and found out the real differences. The screw pattern is slightly different now between the Axis, Axis XP II and the 10/110. So just because the Axis has a short action, doesn't mean it'll line up to bolt in.

Different bolt pattern, Different action length and design (As Troy said, there are no short action Axis, only Axis chambered for short action cartridges) , and different recoil lug system.

They are for all intents and purposes, entirely different rifle families thst happen to take the same barrels and bolt heads.

Id use an Axis ONLY for a long action cartridge.
If going .308 definitely use a savage short action, but watch the screw spacing, bolt release type, and magazine type, as there have been a number of difference.

I havent built from a savage in a while, but they are good solid options for the home gun builder. Also with the ease of barrel swaps.... really the selling point for a Savage build IMO, barrel life isnt really very important.

When I was contemplating a bolt action custom build, I found a lot of good information on the Savage Shooters forum. While THR is general firearm knowledge, the folks over there focus much more on Savages. If you exhaust the answer here, you can try over there.

One thing I learned fast was to pay close attention to the distance between the action screws on Savage rifles. If you are building a rifle starting with the stock or a donor action, measuring the space between the screws to find matching parts is the first step in determining what you have or what you need to look for. The first post in this thread summarizes it well.

On the short action Savage rifles you have the older stager feed magazine and center feed magazine versions. As mentioned there is a difference in bolt spacing. My stagger feed Model 12 has the shorter of the two. And there is teh top bolt release versus the bolt bolt release.

If it was me, I would get a short action with center feed since most aftermarket stocks, drop bottom metal and magazines are made for these.

So one thing I'm contemplating is also getting the action bluep-rinted/trued for slightly better accuracy. One guy at my work would charge about $75 an hour on that. He does gun smithing and machine gun work as a side gig when not selling cars. At the moment he's at least 6 months out due to high demand for work.

My question on truing up an action is, with the tighter tolerances you get out of it, does that shorten the life down or is there no change in that regard?
