My previous questions seem to solicit responces from savage fans. I have a Savage model 1290 super sporter 30-06. Was my grandfathers, I have not shot it yet. I think it is a pre-wwII rifle. Anyone have info on these rifle's or model. Before it was given to me a gunsmith went through it and it is all ready to shoot. Also have a model 1914 savage 22 which I have enjoyed shooting.

I don't know about a Savage Model 1290.
There was a Model 1920 that was normally made only in .250 and .300 Savage from 1920 to 1926. Henry Stebbins says they lengthened the action and made a few in .30-06 but there must not have been many because they don't show up in the Blue Book.

The Model 45 Super Sporter was made in .30-06 and a variety of other calibers from 1928 til 1940. It has the rear locking action they kept on after WW II in Model 340.

A picture would help.

Here are two pictures I scanned, hopefully they came out ok.

Yup.
That appears to be a Model 40 Bolt Action according to Blue Book description. Made 1928 til 1940, dollar value is not great, just enjoy it for a family hunting rifle.

The 1290 may be a distributor's number. A Super Sporter Model 45 would have peep sight and checkered stock.

thanks

The 1290 is stamped below the Savage - Super Sporter, does not say model by it. Thanks for the info, it was damaged on the stock and repaired before it was given to me.

I hit on this thread while searching for info, figured I might as well post onto it. Might help somebody on a future search. I have a Savage Super Sporter Model 40 in 30-06. I am searching for scope mounts. It currently has a scope mounted in a unit that bolts to the left side of the receiver. Works ok, but it is very high and impossible to get a cheek weld while using it. Anyone know if there are bases out there for this one?

Edit: Found it on Midway, of all places! Weaver Top Mount base #11.

I came across this the same was as Chuck did. Very little info seems to be around for these guns.

As mentioned, they were built from 1928 to 1940 and were aimed at the eceonomy minded hunters. My Great Uncle used one from 1932 until 1945 if not longer, I have no records beyond that.

In an effort to gather up some of the rifles he used I finally found one in 250 Savage, the same caliber as he used. The receiver has been tapped for a side mount as well it wears the Weaver #11's that Chuck mentioned.

I am trying my hardest to find a scope mount that is period to the gun. It is proving to be a big challenge as I have found nothing. Can anyone out there offer any insight as to what I could look for that is an all steel vintage mount from the 30's or 40's?

Thanks for your help!
Noel

Redfield was already making the Jr turn-in mounts in 1939 and they listed a base for the Savage 40. Weaver had a whole series of mounts of various heights, the T1 was the baseline model and the next to lowest.

Bear in mind that most scopes in those days had 7/8" tubes, except for 22mm and 26mm imports.

Yeah, I would like to put a Lyman Alaskan on it. Currently it is wearing a German Oigee but they go together like a 70 year old man dating a prom queen.

Are these JR turn in mounts for a ridgid top mount? I'd like to use a QD if at all possible.......

Thanks!
Noel

curious about the Oigee scope

Hello--
I'm trying to learn a bit about Oigee scopes, as I also have one--mine is a 4x with a picket-style reticle, and needs parts for repair. Is yours in this style also? If so, and you do replace yours with a Lyman or other, would you consider selling your Oigee?
Best,
Malcolm
