comes with box, mags and a holster. Listed at $650 (ridiculous as they always are). Asked for "lowest price" and got $520. I think $425 OTD would be a good price, but $520 for a used gun seems a bit high. Has the AS trigger, which feels very nice, and it is the new model with the standard rail. Here are a few questions:

- Is the 40 in a P99 a winner? (I have heard some say that the P99 is BEST in 9mm). It does have a very nice, slim grip. WAY better than a Glock.

- What is a good used price? This one looks excellent, with only a little wear on the slide front.

- What are ISSUEs to look for with a P99 in 40?

- Does Walther CS touch used guns?

Thanks.

Don't know about P99s in .40, but my P99 in 9mm was roughly the $520 you were quoted (this was about 4 years ago IIRC). Frankly, holsters included in the package do nothing for me. More often than not, holsters included don't suit me. And more often than not, they go right into junk drawer. Mags are interesting. More than 2? Are they full capacity? I would say add up to $25 for each additional full capacity magazine. To me used in pristine condition would be $425 that you were thinking (+tax if applicable) or even $450. OTD is too much to expect. Find out what a new one will set you back. The used one should be at least $50 cheaper than that.

I doubt Walther will warrant used guns. Any repair bills and you'll be on the hook for those. Virtually all manufacturers stipulate original owner. If it's an obvious defect in workmanship or materials, then they might rectify the situation, but they're in no way bound to.

If your definition of winner includes great ergonomics, superb "callable shot" accuracy, solid reliability and superior fit and finish, then yes, the P99 could be considered one.

The P99 seems to handle the 40S&W cartridge well. Chamber support is an important issue with me as I shoot handloads, and I was pleased to note the P99 in that caliber does have an adequately supported chamber. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that, unlike most other 40S&W-chambered pistol offerings on the market, the P99 came with a heavy-enough recoil spring to adequately dampen the recoil of the 40S&W cartridge. I've shot my friend's 9mm version side-by-side with mine, and while the 40S&W version does have more of a snap to it, it's still eminently manageable.

Assuming the used package comes complete with the standard two 12-round magazines and the usual accessories (front sights, backstraps, cleaning rod, documentation) and minimal cosmetic wear on the finish, I wouldn't pay more than, say, $420 for it. But that's just me.

Hmm... none that I can think of. To date, I've shot several thousand of my handloaded rounds through my P99, and can't recall it ever jamming or malfunctioning.

I was initially not too happy with the heavy trigger pull, but then came across a posting on WaltherForums.com about how the factory striker spring could be replaced with a "reduced power" one intended for Glock pistols to improve the pull. I ordered a 4 lb. Glock striker spring from Wolff Gunsprings and put it in my P99; this lightened the DA and SA pulls noticeably and did not create any 'light strike' problems on my P99-although some P99 owners on WaltherForums.com did experience light strikes with the 4 lb. mainspring and moved up the 5.5 lb. ones (which was still lighter than the factory striker spring).

If you're able to secure a used P99 in 40S&W at a fair price, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it.

Here's an image of mine:

I've shot over 1000 rounds through my P99 in .40 S&W and I have had absolutely zero failures. This is using both hand loads and factory loads. I wish I could say that for the rest of my guns.

I also agree, the ergonomics are fantastic.

Currently the P99 AS is $679 MSRP new, with most dealers stickering them around $600.

So let's pretend you just bought the gun new, shot it for two weeks, and discovered that the mag release irritates your finger. You got to trade in this well taken care of near new gun. Lets say you're trading, not selling so the dealer generously gives you $475 on your like new used P99 because he'll make a little money on the gun you buy now. With $475 in your P99 the dealer is only making $25 if he sells it for $500. He can't sell it for much more than that because at $500 it's within $100 of a new one. You're still out $125 versus what you paid new.

Now the flip side. Same situation as above but the dealer offers you $375, knowing he'll sticker the gun at $425 and it'll sell for $400 after someone bargains with him on it, again making him only $25. But this time you're out $225 on your like new gun, in other words you lost over 1/3 what you bought it for new.

Note also that dealers who only make $25 on each used gun don't stay in business long. Those numbers are way tight on the used purchased vs. used sticker pricing.

So, considering what a new P99 sells for now I think $520 on a used one with the box & both mags in the condition you describe is quite fair.

P99 - 9mm Saw 21,000 rds(give or take a 2000-3000rds) no errors, then I broke the ejector rod using a promag high cap magazine before the weapons ban went away. Sent it back they repaired it, still no problems and I am probably around 28K

P99c (compact) - 9mm 9-10K No Malfunctions

P99 - 40 cal 8-10K No malfunctions.

I think that that price is absurd, even for NIB. Check out www.gunsamerica.com. There are a number of P99s priced from $400 to $650. At the Saxet Gun Show the P99s are going for about $525, NIB. AJC Sports is the vendor that comes to mind.

The plus side of purchasing in person, at the somewhat higher price, is that you can inspect firshand before purchase. But in my opinion, you should be able to find a better price. Even the highest priced gun store in Austin, TX is selling for $565, NIB.

The recoil in the 0.40 is 'snappy' but controllable. The accuracy is amazing. The polymer allowance for reduced weight makes a very comfortable carry.
