i have a SBE II 28" whith choke tubes etc.. can i shoot a slug out of the smooth bore? if so what choke? its Not a slug barrel so will i harm the gun by shooting slugs out of it?

I dont know anything about your weapon. But both of our weapons are smoothbore. One has a built in Improved Cylinder Choke and the other has a installed I/C choke on it. That weapon has two other chokes for modified and full for turkey.

Only I/C chokes for slugs please. Anything else will restrict it and create a problem.

Be durn shooting that your slugs are approved for smoothbore use. SOME SLUGS... are rifled ONLY.

Feast on them apples.

Cheers.

I definitely agree on using the IC choke, at least with my Remington 870 Express. I had tried using the Modified Choke tube just to see how it would do accuracy-wise, and was not as accurate as using the IC tube.
I used this gun for deer season for a number of years, had a 4 power scope on it. Now I like using a .50 cal in-line muzzleloader. More of an HD gun now, minus the scope.
For best results with this gun, typically used the 1 oz Remington Slugger, 2-3/4" shell. Also the 1 oz Federal Tru-Ball loads.

Ive shot Federal Fosters out of mine with a Mod choke(happened to shoot the best w/the mod)however, be prepared for a lot of lead fouling in the forcing cone and its a pain to get out.

Yes you can.

Sabots are meant for rifled barrels.

Use either a rifled slug or a Brenekke.

Probably IC will prove best.

I used Brennekes either the black bear magnum (Good for either smooth or rifled) or the short field magnum slugs.

But they are a tad smoky when fired in a confined space. However they are the ammuntion of choice for my remington 870.

Another thought about the Brennekes, they have several different types. From the Original round all the way through to the Gold Magnum. (The Gold I cannot shoot, it's for rifled barrels only and way too hot) They produce a good solid shoot and a feeling of confidence that you will drop whatever you might be shooting up to about 120 yards or so.

I will be shooting them at 100 yards when I go to range next time now that eyes are fixed.

Winchester Magnum 3 inch rounds at 1760 feet per second was probably the hottest Ive fired through my gun. They dont leave much fouling behind. But they do produce a flame blast like 5 feet long so be warned. (And recoil... whew...) The blast is my biggest problem because when I send round on it's way I cannot tell if I hit the mark until everything settles down again.

Remington ammuntion is ok, but... nothing special.

Federal Trueballs leave too much plastic behind on the bore to clean. They do shoot very true... (Pun...) Another problem I had with them was the ball hits paper first then the ball then the plastic and tears it all up with 2-4 holes. I have a hard time determining which was the true hit. Might as well get out the triple aught.

Dont count on the fins that may be present on the slug to induce rotation inside your smoothbore. You might get something going but... again it's smooth.

Tequillaeagle-you should shoot a variety of different manufacturer's choices to see what works best in your SBE. You didn't mention your application.
I've tried different loads and was mainly concerned about accuracy with deer hunting in Ohio at ranges out to 100 yards, although where I usually have my deer stand, 50 yards at most to the target is typical, due to undergrowth in the woods.
Home defense could be different, personally I have 00 or #1 buckshot for that. I live in a residential area so have precluded slugs for home use.
There are some managed recoil slug loads available if you want that choice.
Most of the 1 oz Foster-style slug loads I have chosen for deer hunting have exited on broad-side shots at contact ranges of 30-50 yards. Those slugs that were recovered were expanded close to the size of .50 cent currency pieces. I have not used the 3" shell offerings very much, never had the need with what I used, so don't have any practical experience with them. Others here may have.

Hope this is helpful.

For dropping deer at 60 yards or roughly or even larger game, I rely on the black bear magnum from Brenneke. To be fair I have only dropped paper deer.

LOL. But if hard times do come and I have to drop deer again, I can do it. Bears too. Elk? Not so sure. Buffalo? Forget it.

Right, good catch.

I tend to label things in my mind by thier appearance.

Here is information.

Look under the products tab and choose the ammuntion to evaluate.

Black Magic (Aka Black Bear)

http://www.brennekeusa.com/web/text/magnum12.html

There that should help clear things up a bit.

They do have sabots but those are for rifled only and of course the original slug that was apparently proven in Africa etc before placed into production.

thanks for all the help guys that black magic slug looks really good and i think it will fit the bill!!!

Glad to hear it, but try a box of 5 first before you go gaga on the stuff.

If shooting indoors make sure they have the range fans running to pull the smoke, lead and fumes away from you.

I like it but I think sledgehammer at work with 20 bosses standing about doing nothing is easier me times.

Thanks, Hungry Seagull. For a moment I thought they brought out another new slug. Which would be great news to me (I love their products).

tequillaeagle,

Hungry Seagull is right. Try them before you buy them wholesale. Those 3" Black Magics are heavy hitters on both ends of the shotgun. They have 37.3 ft/lbs of recoil on your end of the shotgun. ouch.

Yes they tend to be thumpers. But does not stagger me like the 3 inch winchesters do. About 1400 fps is where I need to be at. Forgot about that little tidbit. I guess I have a box full of the stuff and have to man up, bite back the tears and shake it off.. LOL.

I guess the managed recoils do well too, but dont really offer ME the thump. Makes me wonder who is the one looking for trouble. Me or the gun.

One thing they are gone when you fire. There should be a hole in the target right where you chose to fire.
