I have a 7" AR and it has a heavy (way too heavy if you as me) barrel. I was thinking about having it turned down to a standard type barrel to save on weight, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt anything.

Just make sure the gas block location stays how it is or gets turned to .750 and there should be no problems at all.
You could have it turned down but a new barrel would cost about the same. I doubt you would save more than 6oz either way.
So far the only 7" barrels I have seen were heavy barrels, just looking to shave off some weight. 1/2 pound sounds like a good bit. A friend of mine has a lathe and I am thinking about letting him turn it down then coating the bare metal.

I just cold blued it. I just have plastic HG and everyone in a while put a light coat of oil on it. Its been a few years and no problems.
Yesterday we chucked the barrel into the lathe and turned it down. I didn't think to weigh it but I can tell it helped. Threw on a few coats of cold blue and opened up the gas port a little (very little) and put it back together. First test was done on an M16-A1 lower and it dumped a couple magazines with ease. Then I put it on it's registered lower an ran a magazine through it with no problems. Before I opened the gas port it wouldn't run full auto. I really like this little rifle even though it's loud as hell and it tries to set the world on fire from it's muzzle flash!
