Scary Pre-Hunting Story

I was driving north from York County, PA to Tioga County, PA to spend Friday night with my friend before going out on Saturday for the first day of PA buck/doe season.

On the way, just for fun, I stopped at a gun store along Route 11/15. The place was packed. At least 4 people were filling out forms to purchase rifles (presumably) for deer hunting.

A scary thought to think that they have zero practice with their weapon(s) of choice.

A few years ago during turkey season, my friend and I were done hunting for the day and were at a diner in Columbia County, PA. There was another group of hunters that were loudly talking about their exploits. One guy kept mentioning 'sound shots.' This piqued our interest, so we eavesdropped a bit... He didn't see any turkeys, but he heard them, and fired at the sound. Hence, 'sound shots.' My friend, after hearing a bit more, got up, and I thought he was going to kill this 'hunter.' He called him every name in the book. Told him he was going to kill someone shooting at turkey sounds, which could, of course, be fellow hunters trying to call in turkeys. The hunter then defended his actions, saying he'd been doing it for years, and nobody ever got hurt.

We just absolutely couldn't believe what we were hearing. I simply could not believe people were so stupid as to shoot at turkey sounds! I quit hunting on public game lands after that. I truly hope that idiot has not killed someone...

And another story (not gun or hunting related, but still in the general theme of stupidity).

My development has a facebook group page that people post items for sale locally, local announcements, etc. One day I was perusing the group FB page, and came across a notorious Karen who was complaining that she saw someone hit a black bear that morning, and just drove away without checking on it. Then there were several replies about how careless and unkind people are not to check on it. I had to respond and let all of my local idiot neighbors know not to check on an injured bear. I was truly surprised I had to tell a group of adults this. Jesus. SMH.

My fellow humans' idiocy never ceases to amaze me.

Hum, guess I have lead a sheltered life.

So far, so good. I like it this way.

I can't believe no one shot back. Or at least let out a string of profanities to make a CPO blush!

Had one when I was young; My Dad, his best friend, best friend's son, and I were duck hunting, and me being 13 and Jeff 11, neither had shot a duck before then. On the way in for lunch in the boat, a raft of coots was getting up, and us boys pleaded to let us shoot at them. They nodded yes, and I started tracking one. Saw Rich's head in my peripheral vision, so I fired before I got there, about a foot from his head. Surprisingly, he didn't get mad and yell at me, but my Dad sure did.
Jeff and I each hit a coot, and we were made to clean them, (we just breasted them) and had them for lunch. I have not shot a coot since. I have had coot chili, even with the spices it was not very good.

Many years ago... my uncle was picking corn on some rental property not knowing that a hunter was in a tree in the fence row. During one pass the brand new 9450 combine flushed a whitetail out of the corn. The hunter... panicked and just started pulling the trigger of a semi automatic slug shotgun. He missed the whitetail but managed to put three slugs into the John Deere combine and (in my uncle's words) managed to completely ruin his (my uncle's) good mood. I won't describe the aftermath as it involves a completely self-absorbed neighbor and my Dad and uncle's droll and vicious sense of humor.

I 'twas in a gun store-gunsmith place and a woman comes in with a scoped rifle and asks if they would bore-sight it. Says her husband missed a deer and it was way off. So, gunsmith bore sights it real fast, says yes it was indeed way off, and as she's paying he mentions that he'll still have to zero it with a few shots. The lady says: "oh no, he NEVER shoots it, only at deer". Gunsmith digests that, and mentions that he really should sight it in the rest of the way at a target, but lady assures him that her husband always has it bore sighted, and never shoots it, unless he's shooting at a deer.

You have one thing going for you in PA. They require all 1st time hunters (regardless of age) to have taken Hunter Safety in order to obtain hunting licenses.

I took Missouri's hunter safety about 6 years ago at age 40. I did the online portion while overseas and then scheduled the hands on portion over a vacation. A good family friend taught me gun safety and how to hunt / shot. I didn't need Hunter Safety to hunt on my own land but needed it to hunt elsewhere.

I was amazed by the number of folks who couldn't safely lower a hammer on a lever action. They eventually figured it out with practice to pass the skills test.

Thing is, it caused me to have 2nd thoughts on recommending revolvers to new shooters.

Yes, but it is not well enforced. You can buy your hunting license at many places, including Walmarts, gun shops, etc. When I got my first PA hunting license, I had just returned from Iraq and had been in the military for about six years. They asked if I had taken a hunter's safety course, and I lied and told them yes. I figured my military training more than covered hunter safety. They didn't verify or anything. They just marked yes in their system, and gave me my hunting license. When I bought my kids' first hunting licenses, same thing. They just asked so they could mark yes on their computer. My kids did take their safety courses, but I certainly could have been lying.

A couple of winters ago was bored and I took the Pennsylvania online hunter safety course. Didn't need it I have been hunting for fifty years. It was interesting and was only $20.

I got a certificate that is plastic and the same size as a credit card.

Maybe it's a "Statute of Limitations" thing..? o_O
;)

No, it's a “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones.” thing. People only judge by the yardstick what was done not by being told "I'll have whoever I g*****n please hunt on my property and it's none of your f****g business" after having three large holes put in the works of a million dollar piece of machinery.

And people wonder why landowners post the land and refuse to let anyone hunt.

Did he present the landowner a bill for repairs?

Sounds like maybe you shouldn't have ever mentioned the story in the first place...
