School me on .22LR AR-15s

Yeah, I like the idea of a dedicated .22 upper.

Why won't your local range allow rimfire on the 100 yard range? The range I used to go to had a 100 yard indoor range that I would shoot my Remington 513T at. This a cheap 4-16 scope and shooting CCI Standard Velocity round, I could have some fun and shoot smaller 5 shot groups than just about anyone shooting a center-fire rifle

I have no idea why they have that rule in place. They also won't allow any handguns on the 100yd, unless it's at least a .44 or .45 and has a scope on it. Silly ain't it ?

Anyway, as far as the type of ammo the M4 likes, it doesn't seem to be all that picky. I shot bulk (white box) Winchester, CCI Blazer, Mini-Mags, Remington bulk, PMC Sidewinder and some standard velocity stuff made in the Philippines by Armscor.

Other than the occasional failure to ignite (usually CCI Blazer), it goes through everything.

Been looking at the whole dedicated upper vs M&P 15-22 thing myself. I don't mind swapping out on lowers I already own. But do the current CMMG uppers still not hold the bolt open without the add-on piece? Do the mags drop free? And what about the difference between 16" and 20" barrel length? I can a actually find 20" easier right now...

The CMMG holds the bolt open as long as the empty mag is in with or without the $20 bolt hold open adapter, until you drop the mag since it's the mag follower holding the bolt open. The bolt hold open adapter needs specific mags to lock the bolt open on empty since the mags made for it have a follower that actuates it. CMMG sells the followers so you can swap them in if you already have CMMG mags. Personally I rarely use my bolt hold open adapter, I just slap the mag in and pull and release the charging handle AK style.

Whether the mags drop free largely depends on what mags you buy, since it's not proprietary there's at least 6 different companies making them. You could get mags for the Ceiner/CMMG/Sig 522 for as low as $12 before the current panic. Black Dog Machine even makes a 50 round drum for it.

CMMG upper

Bought a CMMG upper and built up a lower for it, it runs great, not picky on what I feed it.....it is a wonderful tool for practice, obvious advantage being the cost of the ammo. I also use the CMMG as a tool when I am teaching the AR to a new shooter, get them familiar with the platform, then transition up to the 5.56. There are several other guy's that I shoot with that use the CMMG uppers or conversions and they love them also.

I have a CMMG 22lr upper.

1. Will not work with my expensive Geissele trigger.

2. Had an OOB discharge.

3. Doesn't reliably extract.

4. CMMG cust. service has been horrible, even after I replaced the trigger with a CMMG trigger.

5. Never got the BHOA kit to work regardless of what mags I used.

6. Plastic charging handle is crap, replaced it with a metal one.

Supposedly the TACCOM reliability kit helps. I put one in mine, didn't help me, but might help some others.

My Cmmg wasp upper was an old model and came with an aluminum charging handle and is 100% reliable with federal bulk, winchester 333,555...with Cmmg grey mags.

I'm not a fan of the unreliable or no bolt hold open...but hey, you can simulate failure drills with every mag! :)

Kind of doesn't matter. Pretty much everyone is out of stock of the 16". Still looking for info comparing the 16" and 20" accuracy/function. I don't have a 20" in 5.56, so the 16" is probably better. I do prefer the one with FSB instead of the railed "gas block," but they seem to be pretty hard to find too.
