Report: 8 Dead in Finland School Shooting After Alleged Shooter Posts YouTube Warning

HELSINKI, Finland — A teen opened fire at a school in southern Finland Wednesday, killing eight, after posting a video warning about the massacre on the Internet.

The shooter — an 18-year-old man — turned his gun on himself and was reportedly taken to a local hospital.

Finnish media said the shooter revealed his plans in a YouTube posting before the attack.

A YouTube video titled "Jokela High School Massacre" showed a picture of a building by a lake and two photos of a young man holding a hand gun. The person who posted the video was identified in the user profile as an 18-year-old man from Finland.

The profile contained a text calling for a "revolution against the system."

Police could not immediately be reached to comment on the video.

Police confirmed the shooting at Jokela High School in Tuusula, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki, but said they could not give details and did not confirm fatalities.

"The situation is under control," said police spokesman Tero Haapala, adding that "there is no danger to outsiders now."

Kim Kiuru, a teacher at the school, said the principal announced over the PA system just before noon (1000GMT) that all students should remain in their classrooms.

"I stayed in the corridor to listen to more instructions having locked my classroom door," Kiuru told the YLE radio station. "After that I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small caliber handgun in his hand through the doors toward me after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction."

Kiuru said he saw a woman's body as he fled the building.

"Then my pupils shouted at me out of the windows to ask what they should do and I told them to jump out of the windows ... and all my pupils were saved," Kiuru said.

It was the first reported incident of a shooting at a Finnish school, where previously violent incidents usually involved knives but had never resulted in death.

More than 400 students aged 12 through 18 were enrolled at Jokela, according to Heidi Hagman, assistant to the Tuusula municipality director.

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen described the situation as "extremely tragic" and said the government would hold an emergency meeting.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Looks like one of the few illegal things in Finland is concealed carry. Once again a gun free zone ends up killing people instead of protecting them.

I wouldn't put any stock into the ratio of gun ownership being responsible for him getting a handgun. The Netherlands has one of the lowest ratios and they have also had a school shooting.

My condolences for those in Finland affected by this nutjob.

So the shooter is still alive? If he survives and recovers, I wonder how he'll be prosecuted. Does Finland have the death penalty?

Reports are saying he is in poor condition, so maybe a failed suicide?

That manifesto of his is seriously f-ed up.

If you read the columbine killers manifesto (specifically Eric Harris), it's exactly the same thing. He keeps referring to society as robots so therefore I think that he looked up to Columbine killers. His youtube account also had a lot of Columbine videos as his favorites.

No. No country in the European Union have the death penalty. From what I've heard, he was being treated for depression. Might land him in a mental hospital for quite a while, if he recovers. If he goes to prison? 20-25 years perhaps? The laws in the scandinavian countries are seriously lacking. Over here, there's a story in the papers today about a convicted/now released murderer who was sentenced to 11 years in 2000, but was released after roughly 2/3 of his sentence. He is a neo-nazi, he killed a union leader. Now he's out, and he's studying to become a doctor. I don't mind the whole studying thing, but I'm pissed as hell because he was released...

A youtube video actually spelling out what he planned? I'd call that a pretty big warning sign. My bet is that just like the Bethel shootings they'll find many of the kids knew he was about to go off. The sentencing will be interesting if he lives. We put our guy away for several hundred years, so IIRC he can get permissive parole in his late 80's.

U.S. news outlets, the NY Times in particular, are already blaming the influence of America on the rest of the civilized world for this madness.
Only the Times can so easily be self-loathing, arrogant and paternalistic all at the same time.

If you really want to hear about it:

The whole thing is heartwrenching for anyone who loves the children in their lives.

Oh dear, how very sad to hear about those deaths, caused by that lunatic.Lets just hope that the Finns have the sense that the Brits lacked, which is to not to start with gun bans.

If you noticed, there was no anti-gun campaigns, because it happend on foreign soil and also because they don't seem to be that paranoid in Finland as they are, over here.

As for this twisted nutter,he should be sent to a cold, damp prison cell and made to do hard labour, for the rest of his life-in the freezing snow.

How can they blame me?! I've been trying hard for years to take every last gun from Finland.

I remeber that the Sheriff said in a press conference, after Charles Whitman, was killed that spree killings can happen anywhere in the world and not just in the USA.Look at the UK,two nutters inspired by violent films and fantasy worlds, went out and killed-and we suffered these ridiculous gun bans, ever since.
From what I've heard, he was being treated for depression.
A common trail found in any stereo-typical spree killer,as many types have displayed these symptoms.

The Viking knows:

Full autos aviagle only collectors here Finland. The boy was Adolf Hitlers and Josef Stalins fan! I can´t understand.

The police have confirmed that the user id "Sturmgeist89" on YouTube is the same person as the shooter in Jokela. 8 dead, of which 5 boys, 2 girls and the headmaster (middle age female) of the school. The shooter shot himself in the head and has slim chances of survival, according to the doctor treating him. They also confirmed that the weapon was a .22 caliber Sig Sauer Mosquito. The guy had been given a gun permit on October 19 of this year. He had been a member of some shooting club in Finland, possibly a commercial one, giving him the necessary "proof of purpose" for the license.

Unfortunately the discussion on gun permit policies has already started. Let's see how far it gets this time.

Thanks for the update. Here is what one US paper is reporting:

Eight killed at Finland school after YouTube post

TUUSULA, Finland (Reuters) - Seven children were killed when a fellow student opened fire at a school in southern Finland on Wednesday, hours after he posted a video on YouTube foreshadowing a massacre there.

The school principal also died as the 18-year-old walked through the corridors of Jokela High School firing into classroom after classroom with a .22-caliber handgun.

The gunman is in hospital with no brain function after shooting himself in the head, officials said.

"Five boys, two girls and one adult woman were killed," police chief Matti Tohkanen told a news conference.

He later identified the woman as the principal of the school in Tuusula municipality, a town of 35,000 some 60 km (40 miles) from Helsinki.

The YouTube video, set to a hard-driving song called "Stray Bullet" by the industrial rock band KMFDM, shows a still photo of a low building that appears to be Jokela High School.

The photo breaks apart to reveal a red-tinted picture of a man pointing a handgun at the camera.

"He (the gunman) was moving systematically through the school hallways, knocking on the doors and shooting through the doors," said Kim Kiuru, who was teaching a grade 8 class when the shooting began.

"It felt unreal, a pupil I have taught myself was running towards me, screaming, a pistol in his hand."

He said the gunman had been keenly interested in war history and extremist movements. Police did not identify the student, except to say he came from "a normal family" and had a father, mother and one brother.

The weapon used in the massacre was held legally and the gunman had obtained a permit for it just three weeks ago through a gun club, police said.

INTERNET POSTING

The YouTube video, entitled "Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007," was posted on Tuesday by a user called Sturmgeist89.

"I am prepared to fight and die for my cause," read a posting by a user of the same name.

"I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection."

"Sturmgeist" means storm spirit in German. Hours after the massacre, the user's account was suspended.

Lyrics to various KMFDM songs, including "Stray Bullet," were also posted on a web site maintained by Eric Harris, one of the gunmen in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

KMFDM's record company, Metropolis Records, said they were "extremely saddened" by news of the shooting.

Jokela High School serves some 500 middle and high school students. "When police arrived there was complete chaos, pupils were jumping out of the building through the windows," said inspector Timo Leppala.

Outside a church community building near the school, a mother waited as a Red Cross bus pulled up outside and children from the school began to get off. She burst into tears when, through a window, she spotted her child, unharmed.

"This is a peaceful place, nothing like this has happened and nothing like this is to be expected either," Tuusula mayor Hannu Joensivu said.

Despite Finland having the world's third-highest per capita gun ownership, violent incidents are rare at Finnish schools. According to Finnish media, there have been four stabbings at schools since 1999. None of these were fatal.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen told reporters the shooting was an "extremely sad event."

"This will leave a crack in the society we have been used to and have learned to be secure," he said.

The last major attack in the country occurred in 2002 when a young man killed including himself and six others in a bomb blast at a shopping mall in Helsinki.

Just in the news, the shooter has died in the hospital.

He came from a "regular" family of four, had a 10-year old younger brother and mother in city politics.

He's confused. He thinks he's a natural selector. In other words, he thinks he's God (or a god). That's the pinnacle of confusion.

He's also hypocritical. He tries to come across as a tough guy. Meanwhile, he chose perhaps the most cowardly way to kill a group of people.

He doesn't seem to be stupid because he has a relatively sophisticated vocabulary. However, he doesn't strike me as highly intelligent either because he claims to be a god but failed to do anything remotely god-like here.

My guess is that he is severely anti-social, does not play any organized sport, gets picked-on a lot, does not immediately retaliate, feels powerless but is power-hungry.
