I'm currently shopping for a .22 rifle to learn shooting with, and I'm considering a Marlin 980. At some point I'll want to get a scope for the rifle, though I'll be starting with the iron sights that come with it. Before I buy it, I want to know if there's a good scope I could buy for it and later use with a 30-06 semi-auto rifle, which I'll eventually buy once I've learned how to aim. I'd be willing to spend money on a scope that would be "overkill" for a cheap starter rifle but just right for a quality 30-06. So my question is, what type of scope would work with both rifles? Also, what kind of base and rings should I get for the Marlin?

I realize this is a noob question, but I'm just starting to learn. Thanks for any tips!

Any good quality 2x-7x-33 or 3x-9x-40mm variable scope will do what you want.

Suggest you look at the better Bushnell's, Nikons, etc. and stay clear of the cheap Chinese scopes. Money spent up front on a better scope will pay dividends in the long run. Trust me on this!

A cheap scope is a cheap scope, and won't get any better on a 30-06 later on.

The Marlin 980 has a grooved Weaver Tip-Off scope mount built into the receiver.
You will need 1" .22 Tip-Off rings to clamp right on.

Later, you will need to replace those rings with whatever mount system you decide to use on the 30-06.

The .22 tip-off rings will not work on a high-power rifle as most of them require a separate base screwed to the receiver, and rings that match the base you choose.

Thanks rc, that's exactly the info I was looking for. I had no idea what kind of scope to get, and your response cleared up the issue.
