Scope for a Marlin 1894?

what's a reasonable scope for a Marlin 1894 (.38/.357)? This rifle is to be used for smaller varmits (groundhogs, squirrels) at less the 100 yards.

Why the scope? For those over 50, they'll know the answer.

I'd like to keep it around $100.

Get on ebay, and look for a used Weaver K4... Nice and solid.

If you've got the budget for to include the mount, have you thought about using a long eye relief scope? It's relatively low power, but they allow very quick sight and target acquisition. It has always seemed handier to me because at closer ranges you can still see what's going on around you, and can keep both eyes open while doing so.

Mine has a BSA 4X from Wal-Mart, about $30. The mounting base can also be picked up there. While it shoots great if I had it to do over again I would probably go for the Simmons 3-9x50, which goes for less than $40. While the accuracyon these guns is good, you probably won't find them to be 'tack drivers'. This is a fun gun to shoot and yes the scope is a great aid for after 50 eyes.

Even a compact shotgun scope would work, and keep the rifle balanced. Bigger scopes on a small lever action can make the rifle more difficult to balance and aim.

There is another approach. How about a Williams receiver sight. Works well with over fifty eyes, and keeps the gun stream lined and compact. $45.00
