Thanks to my last thread I have a new Model 70 featherweight in 7mm-08 on its way. What are the opinions for a scope?

I'm thinking 3-9x40 but I may drop down a size. Gloss or matte? New Redfield, Leupold, Nikon and Zeiss Conquest are on my list. $400 or so is my budget but I'm tempted to try this new Redfield for $150. If I want somthing pricier on the 70 later I can easily find a home for the Redfield.

So how would YOU scope this rifle?

Talley Lightweight rings (no bases required), Extra Low
Leupold 2-7x33mm VX-II

Total of 12 oz. for scope, rings and screws.

Keeps a low overall weight, a solid cheek weld, and excellent handling, and it provides a fine image for a hunting rifle. It's not even an expensive way to go.

That's what's on mine.:)

I don't see much sense in buying a quick-handling short-action Featherweight, then turning it into a top-heavy rifle.

Two .300WSMs here -
On my CZm3 (a montana99/model70 upgrade) I went with:
Warne bases,
Low Warne QD rings,
Leupold VX II Ultralight 3-9x33mm, LRD reticle
and Butler creek caps.

i get good cheek weld, and can switch out to my night vision scope without loosing zero with the warne rings. Overall its a very comfy, and good lookin, light hunting rifle.

Now, my Model 70 i got a few years ago, maybe '05, and put leupold rings and Burris bases and a VX-I 4-14x40 on it, with Leupold caps.

My CZ setup is nicer: lighter, more versatile, more compact, and cheaper. I recommend it more, although i like both.

Some one on the site clued me in on Gamereeper one piece mts. Best bucks I ever spent. They make them for the model 70. You can get 1" or 30 MM...cured my hunting buddy's woes on his 30-378 Weatherby.

I'd probably go with the Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 or the Leupold VX-II Ultralight in 3-9x33.

I mounted a Weaver Classic V10 on mine. I'm very pleased with this combo.

i went leupold 3-9x40 on my featherweight in 270. looks about perfect, and handles very well. if i had a short action (such as your 7-08), i would go 2.5-8 or 2-7, or even the ultralight 3-9 (actually did that on my remington in 7-08).

Thanks for the responses, I will definately go with a 2-7x33 or similar. I am still considering giving the redfield a chance. Depends on how I like it when compared to the more expensive models.
