Winchester Model 70 Alaskan

Is anybody else drooling and waiting for these to ship? This looks to me about the closest thing out there to a true pre-64 Model 70 as you'll be able to get in a newly manufactured rifle. The .338 Win Mag is calling my name.

I thought long and hard about one in 375H&H but went with the Safari Express instead.

Id like to pick up the safari in 375. They're very well built (all new m70's) and accurate. A meat and potatoes kind of rifle IMO.

Yeah this rifle will be replacing my M70 CRPF ultimate shadow. I was able to check out a safari new M70 this weekend and the worksmanship on it seemed 4-5x that of my ultimate shadow. Just can't decide if I want to go .338 or .300 WM. It'll be replacing a 300 WSM. I got the email that Winchester started shipping the Alaskans today and now I'm chomping at the bit.

Why not 375? It is not nearly as punishing to shoot and does not vaporize game, unless you believe the internet. I love mine. Just a thought. And it is pretty cool to say 375H&H Magnum. Try it... See cool.

For anyone who'se interested, A local guy was able to find one on the telephone for me, should be here by next tuesday. I'll try to get some half way decent pictures of it and post on here for anyone else considering this praticular Model 70. Now what to do between now and then...

The Alaskan does not appeal to my needs. But I'm very impressed with the new Winchester 70's in whatever configuration you want or need. I think they may well be among the best production rifles made. Certainly in my lifetime.

Well I got a great call this morning that my new Winchester had showed up early. Off to the shop I went to pick it up, got my 4-12x Redfield, Bipod, and Sling all mounted on and took it up to break in the barrel and sight it in. I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of the FN Winchesters. I was afraid that there may be some 'lawyer proof safety markings' on the barrel or receiver, but was pleasantly surprised that none were there. This is truly what I would call a 'new old' Winchester Model 70. After the first 5 break in shots (with help from a laser bore sighter) I've more or less got her sighted in shooting a bit high with a tight group at 100 Yards. Would have sent another box down the barrel but a gust of wind raised havoc with my patches so it was back to the house. I appolagize for the dirty truck hood, and lack of skill in photographing rifles. I can take close up picture or try my best to explain any other parts of the rifle to you.

Sorry, .300 Win Mag. Took me about a day and a half of making phone calls while at work and driving around town to find someone who could get their paws on one in that caliber.

Robert, ya got me stoked. I'm waiting for my gunsmith to finish fitting and bedding my B&C Medalist sporter stock, a Weatherby style with Monte Carlo and cast-off to my new Rem 700 XCR II in .375 H&H. I've already loaded six different powders and weights under Nosler 260 gr AccuBonds to test out and I bought a box of Nosler Custom ammo using that bullet to benchmark my loads. I've pulled a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 off one of my .308s and got some Leupold QR bases and rings that I'll mount as soon as it gets back to me.

I'm almost certainly not going to get to hunt this year with it but it's gonna join me in Alaska if I go fishing up there next year and it's gonna go Elk hunting next year. The thing I like is that the .375 H&H with 260-270gr bullets at approximately 2700 fps has roughly the same ballistics as a .30-06 firing a 180gr bullet...but this bullet is nearly 50% heavier than the .30-06. Out to 300 yards, this rifle should be a stone killer and, between the stainless steel and Nitride coating, I'll rust before it will.

PS-I love the new FNH Winchesters. I have one in .30-06 and may get an Alaskan SS/Laminate in .300 WM or .375 H&H. Who knows, if I'm attacked by an enraged chippermunky the Winny's CRF may save me.

You are seriously underestimating the stone cold killing range of you rifle. You've got a serious 500+ yard elk swatter there.

Beautiful rifle. To tell the truth, I'm queer for Model 70s.

However I wish they offered the original Model 70 trigger, or sold one as an after-market add-on. Ever since I had an enclosed trigger freeze up on me in a freezing drizzle high up in the Rockies, I've distrusted them.

A valid concern I think..
