I bought a surplus M91 rifle a while ago, and had always wanted to put a scope on it. However, the only mounting hardware I could find for it required drilling and taping a few screws (making sure that they didn't go too deep and interfer with the bolt) and then bending or replacing the bolt handle so that it wouldn't hit the scope.

At the Syracuse gun show this weekend, there were quite a few M44 surplus rifles on sale (which appears to be a shorter version of the M91, sort of like a carbine version). Anyway, I talked to one dealer who had a mounting kit that had you remove the right sight and install a regular sight mount. For about 2/3 of the price of the other kits, I thought this was a great idea, plus it was much easier to install.

The rail mounted quickly and easily (though I think I want to spend a little more time leveling it). The only scope I had not already on one of my guns, was a small 3x scope that I got with my yugo SKS but never mounted.

It mounts find, but I can barely see through it. That's because of how far forward the scope is on the rifle. If I move my face close enough, everything is fine. So I assume I have to get a scope with a much longer focal length.

I did a bit of on-line searching, and nothing caught my eye to say anything about focal length, or being able to mount it forward on a gun.

So is there some phrase or wording I should look for when trying to find a scope that will work? Anyone know where I can find such a scope? The M91 is more of a collecitble so I don't want to put a fortune into a scope, but I want one that will work and last (I probably only put 100 or so rounds through the rifle in a year).

For the scout-type mounts that replace the rear sight, you need a extended eye-relief scope. A scope intended for pistol shooting will also work, too.
