Just ordered a Savage 12 low profile in .223 this past weekend. What scopes do you guys recommend. I will be asking the guy over the counter for his opinion too when I buy one, but would like to hear your opinions first. It has helped me out in the past when buying rifles. I will be mostly using it for target shooting at the local range at 100 yards and small varmint at 200-300 yards....thx again for all the opinions, they've been valued in the past...

Leupold anything. If you've got alot of money, swarovski, zeiss, leika, pretty much anything but redfield, weaver, bushnell, or tasco.

I have to disagree regarding Weaver and Bushnell. Weaver makes good glass. The Grand Slam is an excellent budget scope. The Bushnell 3200 and 4200 series are fine scopes, too.

As far as "Leupold anything" that's a bit of a stretch. I'd go with the VX-III series or better. If you can only afford the VX-I or VX-II series, there are other scopes in that price range that are argueably better.

For a .223 that you may hunt with, don't go too high on the magnification. The perfect scope for my Savage 12 .223 is a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x14.

I think I could live with a VX-II in 4x12 also. The VX-II in 6x18 might be a little too high of magnification for my brand of stalk and shoot hunting. But if you are perched on a prarie dog town and don't plan to sneak up on anything, the higher magnifications would probably be fine.

I have a Savage Model 12 in 223 as well and it has a 4-12X40 AO on it and that works great for me. The Bushnell scopes in the Trophy series and above would serve you well.
