Which scope for under $500.00

Finally....

somebody that doesn't want to buy the world's best scope for $150:D

IMO...Leupold, Burris (perhaps the best value), Bushnell (used to be B&L), Nikon, and maybe Weaver (I don't have personal experience with them)

I would not buy...Tasco (out of business but some are still around), BSA, Swift. Mixed reviews on Sightron.

Remember, decent mounts and rings will run $70-100. Better mounts mean less chance of knocking it out of zero. Burris has PosiLock rings that have an insert that self-aligns and doesn't leave ring marks.

I always get Butler Creek caps to protect my investment. Also should have a sun shade for varmints.

Something in the 4-12x range up to 6-18x should be fine for critters

Might check e-bay. There's always Burris and Leo scopes there. Some go very reasonably.

Ditto Gewehr 98. Gotta give the nod to the Grand Slam, however, as being the best value.

Super Sniper

Look at the super sniper from http://www.riflescpoes.com

The 10x42M is super nice, I got two. Built like a tank, clear optics. $300 - $400 + shipping

Hot Brass;

I've got a Burris 6-18 target turret on my .220 Swift. I wish I didn't. I've had good results with both Leupold & Weaver Grand Slam.

The 6-18 was the first Burris that I'd purchased. I've used it, but now that I've compared to others, well, I wish I had something different. The second Burris that I bought, I gave away. It was a 3-9 compact A/O. No regrets about dispossessing myself of it either.

For those who wonder why didn't I send it back to Burris for correction; I did. I was told that all was within spec. ie, go pound sand.

I'll second the Weaver Grand Slam. Very clear glass and return to zero is right on. Think I paid $329 for the 3-10x model.

sightron SII. get the mil-dot and a mil-dot master if you're not familiar with it already. great buy and great optics.

I too vote Burris... Fullfield II with Ballistic Plex reticle in either 3-9x40 ($200 from SWFA.com or 3.5-10 x50 for $300. There's also an illuminated reticle version of either scope for another $100 more.

I have one personally, the 3-9x40 version, and I absolutely love it. The optical quality is as good as any scope I've ever looked through, including the Tasco Super Sniper and an ACOG. (well, maybe the ACOG was SLIGHTLY brighter  )

CB900F, sorry to hear about your problems with Burris... all I can say is that mine is absolutely excellent. Not happy about your Customer Service experience though... That "lifetime of the scope" warranty was a big plus for me. You're not the first person I've read that didn't like their Burris compact though... I did much research before buying this one, and found MANY happy owners of this particular model, and not one single negative comment.

Ballistic Plex reticle:

Using the Ballistic Plex reticle with a .223, you are "on target" at 100 yards, same at 200 yards, 1" high at 300, 2" low at 400, and it drops WAY off to 11" low at 500, which you didn't mention anyway. SO out to your stated 400 yards, you are on target all the way out.

BTW, the 500 yard line of the Ballistic Plex is not nearly that close to the edge... It looks much more pronounced in the factory pics. Here's the real thing:

Good luck with your selection.

Sightron Scopes

A good deal for a variable power scope.

For a fixed power, look at the Tasco Super Sniper in 10X or 16X, or the Bushnell 3200 10X40. All of these scopes are durable, with good glass. For more info on them, go to Snipers Hide and do a search in the Optics forum. Very good material by very discriminating shooters.

Either a weaver grand slam or a burris fullfield II with the balistiplex.

Dad has the weaver on his 243 for varmit work, and abslotutely loves it.

I've ran the burris on 2 different rifles, and have been pleased.

There will be a range report thread on my latest fullfield on my 700bdl custom deluxe 30-06 in the next couple weeks.

I do reccomend a 50mm objective for varmit work. Magnification in the 4-16 range, if you're shooting from a solid rested position. If just standing I find I can see my heartbeat over 12X, so I usually don't need more power.
