I'm almost done paying off a Baikal MP94 in 12ga/.308.

I've looked over the gun and I'm unimpressed by the factory open sights and will therefor be scoping it. I'm planning on zeroing the scope for the .308 barrel and keeping the shotgun barrel loaded up with birdshot for the walk home in case I come across a rabbit or partridge that makes the mistake of staying on the ground.

Should I just go with a decent shotgun or muzzleloading scope that can take the recoil produced by the shotgun barrel?

How far will you be shooting at large game with the rifle barrel. 200 yards? A 1-4 or 1.5 to 5 power would still allow you to track a game bird at the lowest setting but would the 4 to 5 power be enought for you. If your not shooting a steady diet of magnum loaded buck or slugs no regular small bird shot will bother any decent low power variable.

If you're willing to spend $400 I'd get the Leupold vx-3 1.5-5x20. I have one on my Winchester m70 in 308 and plan on putting one on the sako I am buying in a few weeks. Great scope with the best warranty around and 1.5-5 power seems to be just what you need.

Any decent 1-3 or 4 is pretty good for what you want. Youll need to practice with the shot gun and either learn to use the sight or ignore it. Another choice would be a red dot or reflex site, not the best for percision but its a capable enough to do the job.

Where does the scope mount? CAN you use one with the shotgun!?!?!? Be careful and get what will survive if you aren't taking it on and off.

What about a high rise mount that is see through? I understand you said you don't care for the irons that are on it, but it seems they'd have to be better than the traditional shotgun bead. Use the irons for the shotgun (using the see through part) and you'd still have your normal 3-9 or 4-12 scope, whatever you choose. The old high rise "iron sighters" have worked for me, and it's what was on my dads 30-06 when I inherited it. I guess I'm a little biased bc of that...

I'm sorry -- I have a .22 Mag/20 gauge Savage w/a 24" Heavy Barrel and it says on the barrel NOT to use a scope with the shotgun. It too has a dovetail. What about scope-eye?

1-3 Weavers are a lot of class scope for the money. I have one on my older Valmet made Savage .308/12 ga. and the shotgun works great at 1x.

I agree with loonwulf. There are alot of good scopes out there with good relief. Like I mentioned earlier the Leupold 1.5-5 would be dandy where you hunt and I'd think it'd have enough eye relief for a 12 gauge. Just go to the local gander mtn. / cabelas or whatever is nearby and check em out. Most of the guys behind the counter at cabelas hunt and are knowledgeable about guns and scopes and could help out. Now if you went to the gander mountain near my house the kids behind the counter don't know a whole lot about the products they sell and i bet half of them don't even know the term eye relief lol. Oh well.

Also try looking on opticworld.com I've ordered two scopes from their site. Their prices are fair but they're not always the cheapest you can find online. They have free shipping thats makes up for it though.

I can't wait to try it out. I handled it in the shop and the fit and finish was a lot nicer than I expected. To be fair, the stock sights aren't horrible, just very small and likely difficult to line up in low light conditions.

Unfortunately, I put the gun on layaway and had only $200 left to pay when my job disappeared two weeks ago.

I'm selling a bunch of bit and piece items on gunbroker and ebay to hopefully finish paying off the gun soon. The shop owner is being very understanding and I don't want to leave a small business owner holding the bag.
