I want to put a scope mount on a 586 or 686. I don't want to drill any extra holes. Are there any good mounts that do not require drilling? Cost? Thanks!
Hmm, tough one. I could be wrong on this one I suppose, but as far as I know there are no mounts available for a 686 not drilled and tapped. I can't really imagine what one would hold on to.
If it was made in the last 15 years or so, your Smith will probably have a couple holes drilled and tapped in the top strap from the factory. Check out the Weigand mount, it uses those existing holes.
I stand corrected. It seems Walkalong was right about Aimtech. They do offer an unusual mount for non drilled S&W guns, that is held on by replacement sideplate screws and some sort of clamp. Unfortunately their page is not very good and the pictures aren't there where they should be. It's too bad too , because I'd like to see what it looks like. Here's the link anyway. http://www.aimtech-mounts.com/index_files/Products and Services_files/id18.htm
I bought my used 686 with an Aimpoint sight and Aimpoint mount that attaches to the sideplate screws. I like the fact that it doesn't require removing (and later, re-zeroing) the rear sight. There's space under the mount for viewing the iron sights.
One downside is that the mount won't work with many grips unless you trim them. I keep that one pair of grips shown in the picture for use with the scope mount. Otherwise it wears a set of Hogues.
Besides the Aimtech and Wiegand- B- Square also makes a good solid base that utilizes the existing rear sight screw holes and a clamp forward . Has worked very well with my RedDot for a couple of years now.
