So, I was out in the woods waiting on Bambi's Dad to show up and I started looking at the rear sight on my Deerslayer when all of a sudden I noticed something I had never noticed before: there are dovetails cut on the sides of the rear sight platform! :what:
Now, I have zero experience mounting optics since I put a $10 scope on my BB gun oh, 18 years ago or so, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but if the rear sight platform does double as an optics mount, it sure looks to be the right size for most of the scopes and red-dot sights I have seen in the store or on other guns.
I don't think I want a scope on this gun, but I have been interested in getting a red-dot style sight in a 1 or 1.5 magnification. The only thing that was holding me back is the fact that I absolutely do not want to drill and tap my reciever, but if I can mount something on these dovetails, that would be great. I also like the idea of having the sights mounted on the barrel.

Has anyone here mounted any type of optics onto this location on their Deerslayer? What kind of optics, scope or red-dot? Haw did that work out for you?

I have never found a scope mount that mounts to these but if you ever do find anything I would love to know! I had the top of my M37 receiver drilled and tapper YEARS ago back when these guns were not worth much.

My problem is that with a stout foster slug the scope has come back and bit me more then once and I actually have a scar between my eyes from one careless shot.

I have not bought a set of rings to try yet but I believe that these dovetails may well be standard 3/8-inch Dovetails. If so, rings are available just about anywhere:

Light gun with heavy recoil and foolish hold off sandbags ----> :what:

So, you want to make sure that the rings are strong enough for that recoil!

As for a scope, on my 12-gauge Ithica 37 with teh 26-inch deerslayer barrel I have been using a B&L Elite 3200 2-7x40 scope. On low power it works great up close and with 7-power I can pick out a buck in the brush and place a shot. My slug gun with Berinikee(sp?) slugs will shoot about 2.5-inch groups at 100-yards. I've made clean kills out 150+yards with this setup.
