Scope mounting on a rifle, scope canting?

I can never seem to get a scope mounted without it being canted, the crosshairs are never vertically square or level horizontally.

What do yall do to get the scope level? Is there a trick to getting it right, or do you just keep tinkering with it until its right?

Its frustrating the heck out of me.

I just leave the rings slightly loose, and tinker with it until it's right, which usually doesn't take too long,

I used to have a hell of a time getting them level, but the last few times I've had to do it I've been able to get them knocked out pretty quick without a lot of fiddling, so I guess it's just practice. I will say though that some rings are better than others. The old style Weaver rings were hell for canting. Because of the way they tighten down they have a tendency to turn the scope as you tighten. Most if not all rings will do that to a degree, but the old style Weavers are the worst. On most rings if you're careful with how you tighten them down and you do a little at a time back and forth, they wont get so squirrely on you.

They have reticle levelers now which are mighty handy that allow you to square the reticle up on the gun, no more eyeballing it. Admittedly I still haven't picked one up. I have no doubt they're worth having though. Hope that helps.

I used a level on my last couple , worked pretty good. Put gun in holder/vice where you can move it to level , level on scope base. Put scope in base(es) ,level on adjustment cap (or take cap off if flatter surface underneath). Tighten screws evenly.

I use a laser cross hair oon the wall ( black and decker makes one for leveling picture frames ) and bag the rifle using a line level on the flat side of the stock. blitz
