Ok so lemmee see if I got this right.

The first number or numbers 1-9X or 3-12X whatever is the magnification and or range of magnification.

The next number 32mm, 40mm etc. is the size of the scope lense and basically is what lets in the light so the bigger the better.

FOV is field of view and the bigger the better. What is a good field of view. I don't have a baseline to be able to say to myself ok this is passable, this isn't or this is spectacular.

Ok assuming that I have that correct give me a baseline assuming 100 yards for both a rifle scope and a spotting scope.

Basically(brand aside) what kind of magnification and lense size should I look for if I was looking for
A) A spotting Scope for 100-200 yards
B) A rifle scope for a 30-06 / .308 class rifle.

Once again brand aside for right now, but let me know if I have a general understanding of brands.

Leupold Excellent American brand. Decent price but not cheap.
Simmons low end to middle of the road but decent.
BSA Bad very Bad
Tasco Bad very Bad
Nikon Good quality high price.
Bushnell, they make decent Binocs but that is all I know.
Zweiss very good quality very high price.

Ok that is the extent of my scope knowledge and yes I am the villiage idiot. :D
