Scope on an SKS

I've seen a lot of bad ideas when it comes to putting a scope on a SKS. Most are replacement covers that limit the scope you can use. I've found a Millett base that seems to be a good answer to mounting a scope.

The base replaces the rear sight leaf and spring. No holes or cutting is needed to mount the base. I went with a Millett SP1 scope. The base uses weaver mounts of any size so you have a lot of scopes you could use. So far I have about 70 rounds thru the gun sighting it in and testing. So far no problems. The scope is far enough forward that there has been no problems with cases being ejected or reloading. I may add a something to the stock to help with cheek weld for a short rifle match coming up. I'll post more as rounds go down range and I get a better idea of how well this really work. So far my first impression is this is a winner.

Yeah, but you have to take the scope mount off anytime you want to clean the gas tube/op rod, right?

That's the rub with scope + SKS: it goes against the design. Most receiver cover scope rails require a shell deflector, and that blocks loading the rifle with stripper clips. I saw a recent scope/rail combo that mounts on the side of the receiver, but it would have cost me more than I paid for the rifle. The 'scout' scope types often block the quick removal of the gas tube. Even the TechSights require removal of the standard takedown lever and replace it with threaded bolt. 3gun, hope that works out for you. What kind of SKS did you mount that on?

IMNSHO a scope on a SKS is like tits on a boar, what are they good for? The SKS will not bebefit from optics especially when they do not hold zero, and the round is designed as a close range carbine round.

I prefer the sight replacement from Scoutscopes.com. You can still easily clean your rifle. And, you can easily remove the scope and use your iron sights.

Well the SKS may not benefit from optics, but my groups sure do. The standard sights on the SKS are pretty tough for old eyes. I'm lucky to hold 5-6" groups with the open sights, with the red dot it will do 2 1/2 - 3".

The nice thing about the rear sight mounts is that they do hold zero. You don't have to be shooting at 600 yards to appreciate optics.

I've got the Millet as well and like it, I added it about 18-24 months ago and have had no problems. I don't shoot milsurp ammo in it so don't worry about cleaning the gas tube too often.

I like the other one linked to also, it looks pretty decent.
