Which would be a good scope for my .308 Remington 700 VLS?

Most shooting will be at paper out to 300 yards. I'd like a scope though that I can also use for prairie dogs and the *very* occasional longer range target shooting.

Any suggestions?

I have two rifles that are scoped and both are Leopolds. IMHO they are the best for the money. Plus you can't go wrong with the lifetime warrenty. Yes you can pay less money, but will you get the same quality and clear optics?

I have a VX III 4.5-14-40 Tactical on my FN Special Police 308. I also have a VX III 6.5-20-50 Tactical on my Serbu BFG 50. The scope on the BFG has has over a hundred rounds fired with it and I can hit a coffee can at 600 yards with it. Plenty accurate for me. Plus most scopes seem to fall apart on 50 cals, but the Leopold on it is still rock solid.

Just my opinion. Good luck with your search

my vls in 308 wears a leupold 8.5-25x50, 30mm tube, and all the other bells and whistles. perhaps a little (lot?) overkill for 300 and in shooting, but for when you decide to start to stretch the range, you won't be limited by the scope.

if i was absolutely certain i'd never shoot beyond 300 yards, then a leupold 4-12 vx-2 would do just fine.

but, i really enjoy prairie doggin', especially long range doggin', thus the big scope.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Leupold recommendations but if you are looking for something a little easier on the wallet, check out a Sightron SII624X42 I don't have this particular scope but I do have two others and have been very happy with both.

Thanks for all the responses! I am pretty sure I will get a Leopold, probably vx3 long range. My concern is over what reticle I need (want?) though. The Boone and Crockett looks promising, but I wonder if a fine Duplex would work just as easily. I checked out this thread about the B&C, and the reviews were mixed.

Any suggestions? Again, I am mostly shooting paper out to 300 yards (actually most shooting will be 200-300 yards), but would like something to use in a varmint situation also.

On my 308 I went with the duplex recticle. I looked at the fine duplex, but I just thought they were a little two thin. On my 50BMG I went with the mil-dot recticle. To be honest, I just haven't gotten used to figuring out ranges in my head using the dots. I'll get it sooner or later though.

You could try one of the Bushnell Elite 3200s in 10x40 mil dot for $180ish if you're on a budget.
