I am scoping two handguns that will be used for hunting. Having never owned or used a scoped handgun, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Ruger Hunter .44 mag to be used on deer from 20 yards to 100 yards.

Ruger 6 7/8 govt target .22 to be used on squirrels under 40 yards.

I'd like a quality scope on the .44, but don't want to purchase beyond the point of diminishing returns. The .22 just needs a decent quality scope that holds zero.

I budgeted $400 for both, but I'd be really happy if I spent less.

Recommendations/pics???

Thanks

I'd go for a Thompson/Center Recoil Proof scope. In my experience, the warranty is good (yea, I broke a couple but on handguns with much more recoil than a 44 Magnum) and if you're not in a big hurry, you could probably pick up one on eBay for in the $100 range.

+1 for the TC scope. I used one on my Encore pistol, in .270 Win. :D They hold their zero very well too. Great scopes. That same handgun ripped the crosshair lose on a Burris pistol scope.

I use a dot sight on my MKIII. It's quicker sight acq when the rats are moving. I've hit them out to 40 yrds with it. I've got a 2x weaver setup for it but I find it to hard to pull them out of the leaves. I would recommend the Nikon EER scope for the 44mag. It has the longest eye relief of any I have seen with Leopold being 2nd. I have long arms and it's important to me.

I have a Bushnell Trophy 2-6X32 scope on my Ruger SuperRedhawk for past 10+ years and 2,000+ rounds. Once it was sighted in I never had to make any adjustments. I believe they are about $200. The Leupold 2X scope I have on my Python has worked well too but for 100 yards I would want a little more magnification than just 2X.

I use a 2x20mm Burris on my big bore revolver. 4x is way too much and really hard to gain target aquisition. I use various red dots on my rimfires.
