While each part of the rifle is important, How important are scope rings? Leaving out the extremes of "cheep" to "expensive" is there really a difference in performance, quality, or accuracy?

Yes. Quality of rings is very important. Fit and design is highly important for proper mounting of the scope. It is very important to have a scope base and scope rings that are properly inline to prevent scope binding, tube bending, etc. Although, ring lapping is a proper procedure for any scope ring setup.

But if you're asking if there's a difference between say Burris, Leupold, and Millett standard rings, then no, they're pretty much the same. What are you looking to scope?

I'm putting together a can killer and am trying to do it as cheaply as possible. I started with a Ruger 10/22, added a target stock and carbon fiber barrel. Just go a decent BSA scope from cheaperthandirt.com and was looking for some rings.

this is a sample pic (but mine is blued not ss)

ps. Nice M1!

That 10/22 of yours has a grooved receiver for rings? If so and you are looking to scope it that way, then any rings made for the Ruger-style will work.

The only 10/22 I scoped was using a Volquartsen barrel mounted scope base (on a Volquartsen barrel) using Leupold QRW rings.

I recently put some Burris Signature rings on my Swedish 96 Mauser. These have a two piece spherical bushing that fits inside the ring and grips the scope. This lets you get a perfectly aligned and gripped mount even if the mounts aren't perfectly inline, no lapping necessary. They also sell offset bushings so that you can get the scope closer to zero without wasting the scopes adjustment range and allow you to keep the scope optically centered.

Are you using the old style receiver base or the newer weaver? I did not like the selection of rings for the older narrow base and purchased a Burris weaver rail and rings. The scope is a simmons WTC 6.5x20 which SWFA sells for $100 brand new.

Im using the old style base, not the weaver but it does not seem to be any more narrow than the weaver.

For the receiver mounted weaver scope bases on the 10/22, I'd probably go with the Burris signature zee rings.
