scope rings

when i mount my weaver rings on my weaver base with out the scope the fit issloppy when i add the scope it snugs up but i still have to tighten the rings to the base to the point of breaking the screws the rings are weaver quad rings any ideas or is this just the way it is

If your rings cannot be snugged without the scope in them... they will not hold zero. They snug up with the scope in them because the scope is providing resistance.

If you have to tighten until anything breaks, it's either being installed wrong or is a defective product.

My guess is you either have an undersized base or oversized rings. You shouldn't have that problem, and like said it won't hold zero it that's the case.

Are these Weaver brand, or Weaver type? I've used beaucoup Weavers through quite a few decades, and this is a new one to me.
