Yesterday in order to celebrate the subjugation of the western hemisphere
under the bootheel of invading Europeans (Columbus day). I went out to Delco field and stream to do a little rifle shootin.

I brought the savage 10fp Le2 with B&C Duramaxx stock, and Nikon 4.5-14 AO buck master scope. I had mounted the scope using a one-piece leupold mount, and standard rings. This is the second time I have had this rifle to the range.
The first time I fired 40 rounds of my handload 40 gr IMR 4064 with a remington sp 165 gr bullet. The first outing I was able to make decent offhand groups and got the scope sighted at 100 yards (in 6 shots). The scope stayed put and the poa was poi.

Yesterday I started shooting and was making some very nice groups offhand (for me). I was shooting at a 50 yard smallbore target with 5 orange bulls at 100 yards, hitting them very well. at one point I had a 2.5" 12 shot group in the center bullseye.

Again I brought 40 rounds of my revised handload; 42 grains IMR 4064 168gr sierra matchking hpbt., and a few reminton sp 165's at 42 grr.4064.
Both loads hit to point of aim at 100 yards.
After round 35 I noticed that the scope, had slipped forward an inch in the rings!!!
Yes Forward as though the rifle had moved back and the scope stayed put!!!! The rounds were stil hitting to POA!!!!

So at that point I took out the SAR-1 figuring I would remount the scope when I got home.

Later I checked the rings and they were still tight as I dare make them (fear of damaging scope tube).

So I loosened the rings and discovered that CLP or oil had gotten under the rings and was wet on the tube of the scope I degreassed before mounting the first time. So I degreased the tube and mounts and remounted the scope.

This time I had the new stock on which has a Pachmeyer decelorator recoil pad. I also fired five shots off an improvised rest, and noticed that this made the rifle kick harder and straight back.

What can I do to stop the scope slipage??
Do you folks have problems with this happening?
Could it be related to the rest or the new recoil pad?
Did the clp getting under the rings cause this?
How do I stop oil from getting under the rings, when I wipe down the rifle?

Thanks

Put just a dab of Clear Silicone caulk or rubber cement on the rings just before mounting the scope. Any more than a bb sized blob for both rings is too much.

Always put Lok-tite (or a similar product) under the rings. If you don't have any, a bit of masking tape will work just as well.

"Yes Forward as though the rifle had moved back and the scope stayed put!!!!"

Why the exclamation points? That is exactly what happened. The rifle recoiled and the scope (obeying Mr. Newton's laws) tried to stay where it was and moved forward in respect to the rifle.

Remove the scope, clean all oil off it with a solvent and clean all oil off the rings. Then put the scope back in the rings and tighten the rings down TIGHT and even. Don't worry about crushing the scope - won't happen.

I would not put any glue or anything on the scope or mounts - you do want to be able to take the scope off if you have to. I have used a bit of resin, but even that is not normally necessary. I have no problem with lapping the rings, but it is a lot of trouble and isn't necessary.

I powder the insides of my rings with a rosin bag. I don't know if it helps or not, never had a scope slip in the rings so it doesn't hurt, right?
