Hello All
I am considering replacing the Trashco 3-9X scope that came on my "M700 Tupperware Special" with a better scope. The Trashco has performed very well, but it is still a Trashco. I have tentatively decided on a Nikon Monarch 6X scope and Warne detachable mounts. I would like the option of remounting the Trashco if the need arose.
While thumbing through the Brownells catalog, a question came to mind. My rifle came with standard Weaver mounts and rings. If I took the scope off the rifle, leaving the rings attached to the scope, and then remounted the scope on the rifle in the same place it was before, would it hold zero? Seems that if zero was unaffected after mounting, I wouldn't need to purchase the Warne rings. Is this correct?

Thanks

It should. It would require that the tolerances of the mounting surfaces were close enough that the scope was indeed in the same place as before. However, one test is worth a whole bunch of "expert" opinions. Go to the range, fire a three-shot group and R&R the scope. Shoot again, and see what happens. It's probably a good thing to tighten the lock-down screws to the same tension, each time.

Nice in concept but practice is another matter. You should always re-zero the firearm after the scope is mounted. Remember what McBride did in WW I, he stuck a razor blade into the scope mount, broke it off and let it rust in place. It keep his scope rock steady (and the armorer long faced).

Confession time. I've got Leupold QD but haven't bothered removing the scope from the gun.

I have removeable mounts in several rifles; having these rails and mounts is very common on AR15 rifles, but I also have Leupold QD mounts on two other rifles. One is a Remington 700 In-Line Muzzleloader (I figured it would be easier to clean if I could remove the scope).
I have found that removing the scope or removing the optic and then putting it back on is usually close, but not perfect. Right off the top of my head I can't remember how the Weaver rail looks on a "regular" rifle and I don't have time to look right now, but on my other rifles, I have a Weaver rail. Make sure you know, or preferably mark the slots you were using before you remove the optic. Another thing that someone told me that seems to help is to pull back on the optic as you are trying to re-install it. In other words, as you tighten the mount, pull the ring back toward the rear of the rail. This is just a further attempt to get it back in the exact same place.
