I have a Ruger No. 1 which has a Simmons Aetec scope that has about a 3.5-4" eye relief. My problem is I can't get the scope far back enough to get a comfortable hold on the rifle (scope is too far forward for me). I was thinking of doing one of several options and was hoping you guys can help figure out which is best or suggest a different route. I'm assuming I need to move the scope about another inch or two rearward.....
- Offset rings (I would need high double offset rings that no one offers)
- Shorten the stock
- Use an adapter that allows the rings to be mounted to the rear

Buy some high or medium base rings? Or see-through rings. They should be tall enough to let you move it back.
The rings you've got on it look to be low rings.

I think Ruger still makes their offset rings although I don't if made in sst. I have a set on my Ruger #1A in 270. they might not get you an inch but maybe .750. look at their website

Join the club. I put a Leupold 6X on my number one because it has the longest eye relife I could find. I still needed offset rings.

Just call Ruger and ask their Customer service for suggestions. I have twice called Ruger for scope ring questions (one pistol and one rifle), and after giving me the proper rings suggestions -they exchanged my current rings for the proper fit ones for only a $5.00 shipping fee.

Ruger service is pretty awesome.

Thank you, joel1316 for starting this tread as I have the same problem just a different scope. And thanks to you CWL as well for a tidy solution to it.

If your even considering this, you may want to check legth-
of-pull on a scoped rifle that you're comfortable shooting.
You don't want to force shooting a rifle that doesn't fit you.
That's a drag and you'll never achieve accuracy potential.

I have a Ruger No.1 B in .243 caliber. Got the same problem. I tried several different scopes and found a combination that works OK, but not ideal.

I have heard about the offset scope rings, which I think will fix my problem with eye relief. I had considered buying a pistol scope to fix the problem.

Kind of a bizarre deal trying to mount a scope on a No.1! I had bought myself a nice little Leupold vari-x scope and set it all up, only to find out my neck wasn't long enough! I think I have ended up with an old Redfield scope rigged up that works ok for me. At least until I spring for the offset mounts.

You have a few options, with that large, garbage-can sized scope there really isn't much you can do, offset rings will bring the scope back but they are not tall enough (like you mentioned) to clear the rib. You will need to replace the rib if you want to keep that scope and move it back.

Here is a picture of the clearance with offset rings, the scope is a VXII 2-7x32, you can see that it is about as far back as it will go due to the rib, the 'shelf' of the offset rings, and the front bell of the scope.

Another, possibly better option is to find a Burris Fullfield or Fullfield II scope. These are great scopes and happen to have the right configuration to allow the scope to come back towards the eye very nicely. If you look closely at this picture you will see ring marks on the Burris from it's tenure on the #1. I purchased the Burris for my Swede so it eventually made it's way back there, and it was too much power (IMO) for my #1 in .338WM, besides the fact that a matte scope on a gloss gun is a major fashion boo-boo in the woods. Anyway, I now have the Leupold on the #1 and like it fine with the offset rings.

For your situation, the Burris will get you the largest scope with the correct configuration and eye relief. Good luck, I consider the sghting options to be the weakest point of the #1s.

Ahhhhh.... I'm not the only with this problem.... Thanks guys...
I tried calling Ruger a while ago and they said that if the rings was out of the package that they could not exchange it. I might try again and see if I can work out a deal for some double offset rings. I like the Aetec scope, but will change it out if its too big as I could only find offset rings in medium.

Anyone ever heard of this base?

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=8803&title=RUGER~+#1+SCOPE+BASES

"Nicely-made, steel bases let you move the scope back to get correct eye relief without "crawling" the stock. Weaver-style bases have extra cross slots to accommodate all sizes of hunting, target and varmint scopes, plus electronic sights. Easy, no gunsmithing installation, replaces the sight rib on Models 1A, 1S and 1H. Front base is machined to accept the factory rear sight leaf. Models for 1V and 1B replace factory bases."

Yeah, if you search the single-shot forum at Accurate Reloading there is some discussion about them and a few pics of them installed. They seem to always be out of stock for the ones I needed, and I wan't crazy about the way they looked either. That said, I think the offset rings I have don't look too hot either, they need to be milled on the edges to soften the look to the point where it will look more like the front of the rib, or the front sight ramp.

It's another solution, but only when they are in stock.

Geojap, that's a fantastic rifle, good grain in the butt stock and I love the full length forend.

I had the problem and swapped out scopes, going to a longer eye relief scope. I too choose a VX-II 2-7 x 33. I used the shorter eye relief Aetec on a Ruger 77 Mk-II where it's just fine.

Thanks. :) I agree, that stock is one of the nicer ones I've seen. I just picked it up a few months ago from a local guy who transplanted to Austin from Virginia and didn't use this rifle any more. I put this scope on it and I need to go sight it in and see how it performs.
