l want a scoped 357 revolver to shoot prairie dogs.

l will be shooting max load 95-110 grain bullets.

l have a 27-2, mount, 4x scope. 27 will need drill/tap.

l found a scoped 19 for sale.

My question is which route to go.

l am a bit concerned if the 19 can endure hi speed lite bullets.

l know the 27 can. l just dont want to disturb the gun balance.

lt will cost $75 to have the 27 drilled. 19 will cost me $400.

Collector value is not a concern.

Thanks

S&W introduced the L frame models as the K frame models weren't standing up to a lot of magnum shooting. They were meant to be shoot mostly with .38's for practice and then occasionally with .357's. Stay with the M27, it was designed for steady use with magnum loads.

If you're going to be pushing light bullets like that at high speed, I'd lean toward the M-27. Why beat up a nice m-19 that isn't in production anymore?

Bigger the better. +1 on the 27. If the 27 is a 4" I would trade the 19 off for a large frame 6" Smith or Ruger GP100 or buy one outright. The more velocity the better. Dog shooting typically long range. Might want to consider a TC Contender.

Though collectors value is not an issue what about over all value? Drilling a 27-2 will make it worth a lot less, so if you ever sell it not only are you out the money used to pay the gunsmith you can go ahead and knock another $200 off the value. You will be turning that $6-700 gun into a $400-450 dollar gun. I figure you would take less of a loss if you bought an 6 or 8 inch L or N frame gun that is already drilled and tapped for a scope. They can be found round these parts for $400 as nobody wants the long tubes.

I got an 8 inch 27 for $400 because someone decided to drill it. It's a great shooting hunting revolver but it was a classic, now it will never be anything more than a buggered up old shooter.
