My 12 year-old son and I have been trying to get down to business and scope a Remington 40X .22 that I bought from the CMP last month.
It took a while to find bases. After they were rounded up, we said we were going to do it, but let other stuff get in the way. Once it was trout fishing, and once it was a quick range trip with another .22 and some shotguns. Other times it was just inertia.
Today it was wet, gray and about 25 degrees colder than yesterday. My son suggested we scope the 40X for shop. That sounded OK to me. I'm acting principal of the home school since my wife is out of town for the day, so I made an executive decision.
Things went pretty well until we tried to put the 8-32 power scope on using regular rings. The scope bell scraped on the barrel when I tried to adjust it. We tried a 6-24 power scope with the same problem. I will be calling around to locate some higher rings this afternoon.
I had a Remington 788 in .308 hanging around for a while. It is for my son to use as a deer rifle in a couple of years. Since the vise, Guntite and an assortment of screwdrivers was already at hand, we put a Bushnell 1.5 to 4.5 power scope on the 788. I guessed at the eye relief and then tried it offhand before tightening the ring screws. It fit me well and came to the shoulder like a 20 gauge birdgun of my acquaintance. My son tried it too and it felt, "really good!"
We are both looking forward to trying out the 788, as soon as the rain stops.
