Hello, rifle newbie here.

I have on order a couple of rimfires to get me started on rifles. I plan on killing lots of paper at the range, typically at 100 yards. :) I have the rifles on the way & the scopes, but trying to figure out just want to order for mounts/rings is a bit of a mystery to this handgunner.

Rifle 1
Weatherby Mark XXII .17 HMR + Leupold 4.5x-14 40mm scope

Rifle 2
Remington BDL 552 Speedmaster .22 + Nikon Prostaff 3x9 40mm scope

The Weatherby docs say it has an 11mm dovetail rail. I could order a set that they offer on their own site, but I was wondering if a Leupold ring set would work, and if so, what base I needed.

For the Remington, the user manual & site just says "Receiver grooved for scope mounts for precision shooting with optics".

Probably the answers are obvious to anyone that knows that they are doing, but that's not me. At least its not another "what caliber is best for bears" thread! ;)

Appreciate any help.

Grooved receivers are about the worse way possible to mount a scope as they rely completely on clamping action to hold the scope onto the rifle. Sadly unless you want to have holes drilled in your rifles you are stuck with them. For the best result I have found the Burris or Refield all steel rings for grooved receivers work the best.

Last Weatherby Mark XXII I handled and came close to buying was also drilled and tapped for scope bases. So with that in mind I would put on a Leupold two piece base with windage adjustment and Leupold rings.

This is the method I have mounted the Leupold 2.5-8X36 VX-III on my Cooper M57, and it is as solid as any centerfire rifle scope mount, since it pretty much is a centerfire rifle scope mounting solution.

Good 4 screw dovetails will handle most anything you will do with these unless you toss them in the back of the truck or something?

Let us know about the 572, I had one for about a month all the scope did was show how big the group was. I hope it was a freak, I almost cried, I love Remingtons. I'm afraid the last good fieldmasters were in the 60s. My theory is they chambered it on same dimensions as a auto, loose to feed reliable. If they did they ruined it. If you show me good groups I'll go get another one! I have never felt a groove type tip off mount was less than adequate, not any recoil to factor in, you would have to drop it or throw it to knock it off. Holy @#$ you got a 552 Speedmaster. Disregard! Damn Bifocals!

thanks

Okay, for the 552 Speedmaster, I think I'll go with some Burris rings It's the only set I've seen that has a review of someone with the same model, which is reassuring.

I'll find a set of base + rings for the Weatherby.
