I've asked this on Rimfire Central and Optics talk, to no avail. I have this Remington 597... I've already proven that the bone stock rifle is far more accurate than I am as a shooter. I'm "at that age" (or so my optometrist says) where my eyes are having a hard time focusing. I can shoot this little guy pretty well, but the front sight bead just seems to get lost, and the target is still blurry... But I digress.

I think that if I could just aim better, I could hit better... ( I can hear the rousing "Ya think?") so I'm trying to fit a scope to it. I don't want to put a $15 "rimfire" scope on it, and I also don't have Leupold cash laying around. After researching different models, I decided to try a Simmons .22 Mag 3-9x32 AO scope. With what little I know about optics, it seems like a decent value for the money.

The problem is this: I just can't seem to fit it to the receiver well. It came with rings that don't fit the grooved receiver. I bought a set of Weaver tip-off rings, and the objective bell hits the rear iron sight on the rifle. (I don't want to remove the rear sight unless I have to, because little parts tend to get lost in my house. ) I then bought a set of see-through Weavers and it now clears the rear sight, but I have another problem: I have the front ring mounted as far forward on the receiver as it can go, and the scope is as far forward as IT can go, and I still don't have enough eye relief to get a good picture, with a decent cheek or chin weld... :cuss:

Is it the scope? Is it me? Or is there a way to mount the scope farther forward on the rifle? (I've thought about using both rings on the back half of the scope... how well would that work?)

Pardon my ignorance, but I need advice, and I need it bad!

Any ideas?

Seems that you cannot slide the scope back far enough. Get another set of see through mounts that clear the height of the sights. Best bet is to get rid of the sights altogether since you have a difficult time seeing though them anyway. I have a remmy 597 22LR and don't have the iron sights and don't miss them at all. Love the scope set up. IMHO see through mounts are outdated. Get a solid mount, you are going to have much less problems with the scope walking around on you over time.

Sounds like you do have a problem there. If you are not going to be dropping the rifle or anything, the two rings on one side setup should be fine. Its not like these 597's kick at all.

By the way, here is a link to a pic of my 597, maybe it can help you with your setup. Though mine did not come with irons from the factory. Oh, and excuse my cheap bolt on the barrel bipod, I have very little money in the gun fund:uhoh:
