Today was the day, the BIG day! Off I went to my outdoor local range with the CZ Scorpion...well, there was one minor item before I left...

I have no case for this pistol! Nothing I own is big enough, so it ended up riding in the same case the vz-58 rides in. This would prove my undoing later...

The range was packed. I hate snowbird season. I did find a pistol range where the only shooter was packing up to leave, and him being a chatty happy fellow, I let him see and fondle the EVO. He said he will be looking for one...

I set up the camera, the stool, the target and moved the rifle case...

AND I DROPPED THE SCORPION!!! I FORGOT TO ZIP IT BACK UP AFTER SHOWING IT OFF AND IT FELL TWO FEET ONTO SOLID CONCRETE!! ON THE REAR SIGHT!!!

My language would have shocked a sailor. I should know; I'm a sailor and I was shocked at what I said! I also should have known better - this is a military accepted design, so something like a little drop on concrete isn't going to do anything foul. A minor scrape on the rear sight right protective wing, and a scuff on the bottom of the pistol grip. I still felt amazingly stupid...so to cover it, I decided I'd better do some shooting! First up, shooting from the front rest.

Let me be perfectly clear - I have never owned a firearm like this before, have no experience whatsoever with how one shoots said firearm, so I tried more than one stance. This one I used soe various factory JHP loads, to include Remington non+p 115gr JHP, Golden Saber and Gold Dot.

All rounds were fired at paper at 20 yards - Thugly is down sick with a broken chain shackle, and until he gets out of the garage/hospital, it's all paper. This was representative of the rested groups with the Remington ammo.

The Golden Saber and Gold Dot rounds were more of shotgun patterns than groups. This could be due to the trigger pull, which is heavy, but steady. It could also be due to the sights - ghost ring rear post front is NOT set up for target work...but I want to see how well it shoots, not just look cool on You Tube! Oh, yeah, got TWO short test films done, not enough to use, before people descended on my little range, so no film yet...maybe later.

So I decided to try it standing. That worked pretty well.

124 gr Lee cast loads, powdercoated, also hit the target, but nothing spectacular. I finally went to shooting from the kneeling position, with my right elbow braced on the concrete bench - ripped up the skin on my arm. Was worth it. I was running through the wide selection of factory and reloaded stuff when this happened.

That is a +P load for the 115gr Hornaday XTP bullet, a well regarded SD bullet that I find locally for loading once in a while. It consistently gave me groups like this.

So what did I think?

Pure fun. .......but.......

That right side selector lever has GOT to go. It was digging into my trigger finger right in front of the first knuckle, and that hurt. I had to adjust my grip, which may have also accounted for poor groupings. I spoke to my gunsmith friedn in Mesa who has a Dremel and ideas. Second, I had two failure to feeds from one 20 round mag. After that, flawless functioning with all magazines. I am putting those down to teething, brand new gun. Or maybe it just needed to knock stuff back into place after being dropped... :fire: *cuss, yell, rant, rage* :fire:

I need a submachinegun case. That case I used was not the right one. I could finally try figuring out the sling and just carry it...that would be interesting. :)

I had fun trying the various apertures, and for target work, it seemed the second to smallest worked the best. I used the largest ghost ring chasing some clay pigeon fragments up and down the far berm from the standing position with the Lee cast loads, about 30 yards, and I hit it. I discovered that the hand positioning that worked best for me was around the front of the magwell, pulling back. The peep sight seemed too small for me, without a stock or cheek rest for consistent cheek weld. The various ghost rings were easy to pick up and fast to use. Thinking VERY hard about trying my Bushnell TRS-25 on here.

All in all this is a very fun gun to shoot, and I can't wait to play with the various setups I can use with it, plus the SIG Brace Adapter, and when I can, a real stock when I SBR this thing.

Vey cool! Not the drop so much, but otherwise. I used a Magpul sling on my P556 when I had one. It helped stabilize the gun if you pushed it away from your body. If you plan to SBR it though, I wouldn't bother with the sling.

Now that I look, that is a bad place for an ambi safety selector to be. I can see how it'd get annoying.

Enjoy.

Just attached the sling...I THINK I did it right, never used a single point sling before.

Push out like this?

It actually slid through two points of contact.

The trick to using the sling, from my experience anyway, is you want to fiddle with the straps so it fits tightly around your chest, so there is only a single strap extended towards the gun. Otherwise you end up with the v shape of both ends of the strap hanging out in front of you. Then the strap extending towards the gun is lengthened to the LOP that fits you. Taking it on and off is then just a matter of adjusting the chest strap.

At least that's how it worked on the Magpul strap I had on my P556. It LOOKS like you can do the same on that strap but I might be wrong. And if what you are doing works for you, then ignore me.

If that strap feels awkward you may want to spend a few bucks on a Magpul sling, or I think Blackhawk makes a good one too.

Looks like you're having fun!

Definitely rates very high on the coolness rating chart! Thanks for the range report.
