Scottish Sword ban

Huh?

I thought England already had severe laws against carrying what we in most of the USA would consider ordinary pocket knives.

And just who are these gang members who commit most of the "blade crime" in Scotland? Are they native Scotts, or the decendants of recent immigrants?

For that matter, who and what are the "yobs" I keep hearing about?

@ munangokeewati:

Yes, we have pretty much identical laws on blade carry to California (our laws were modelled on theirs).

Unless you have a 'good reason' (such as a need for work or a specific task like camping or hunting) you can only carry a folding pocket knife with a cutting edge no greater than 3" in length. Arguably, the blade must not lock i.e. slip joint. This is not written in law, but there is a case where a judge said a locking blade was not a 'folding pocket knife'. Precedent was not set, but it could be your case that sets it, so best not to risk it IMO.

This new law (which is only in Scotland) is concerned with the purchase of knives, not their carrying.

Who are the people doing the stabbings? Mostly young, white males from poor backgrounds. What do they use? Kitchen knives mostly, otherwise cheap switchblades and 'rambo knives' like the tat you find on eBay for $5.
