I recently picked up a Bushmaster XM15-E2S with CAR stock. It`s got A2 sights which are okay but I`d like to try some optics on it. It`s got a fixed carry handle and I`d rather not have it up way high. How well do the scount type mounts that cantilever the rail down and in front of the handle work? I`m thinking I could top it with a decent red dot and co witness the iron sights through it. Opinions? Marcus

I've handled and fired AR's with the cantilever mount putting a red-dot sight in front of the handle. However, with all that ironmongery protruding ahead of the handle, it's a fairly delicate setup. One good knock against something and it'll be whacked out of true, and then sighting becomes iffy at best. I'd suggest either a sight on top of the handle, or something mounted on a Picatinny upper handguard (if you can see it through the handle, that is).

the 30 dollar tapco gooseneck is a tad wobbly

the ARMS 39A2+ is a solid piece of kit
it has a hinged lock bar that goes behind the A2 carry handle and a center of the handle lock nut assembly

At work we have the Trijicon Reflex sights mounting on a forward carry handle mount. I haven't seen any major problems with them, but I just don't really care for the setup. Our sights lock in with a locking nut/lever through the A2 carry handle hole.

I'd definitely go for the Aimpoint Comp M type scopes over the trijicon. The trijicons are nice since you don't have to worry about batteries, but I've had trouble finding targets in artificial lighting conditions at longer distances, such as lighted perimeter fences.

This is what I run with my reflex. Don't recall the mount number but it is on the Trijicon website.

Just curious, but why'd you opt to mount the optics on the scout mount, rather than the flattop reciever?

Just a guess; but when he hits that Surefire in a dark room he will need the irons because the reticle won't be there.

natedog,

Actually, I like to co-witness my irons which I could also do without the carry handle but not without more money and another rear iron sight mount. Just hasn't been an issue, to fix, for me.

BR,

You are partly right on the washout. However, I turn the filter to blackout, on the Reflex, and as a result you do not get any washout. You can still see what you are shooting at since you leave both eyes open. I do the same thing on bright sunny days when the reticle starts to washout. Turn down the filter and those problems go away.

Hope that helps clarifies why.

That ARMS mount really looks beefy but it`s a bit pricey for a plinker AR. Anything half decent for say under $75? I`ve seen a few different ones but it`s hard to tell how well they actually work from a pic. Any opinions on the best red dot for under $200? Marcus
