I am thinking about adding a scout scope to a Winchester 94. I was wondering about options for the mount. I know XS Sights offers one, but what other options do I have? If anyone has a scout scope mounted on a 94 please chime in and let me know what mount you used and how it worked out. Pictures would be great also. Thanks.

My friend just scoped his Winchester 94 over the weekend. It was a two piece mount made by Weaver if I remember correctly.

He's referring to a forward mount, not a standard receiver mount. Now that Hornady has come out with pointed bullets safe for lever actions, a scope really makes sense on a 94. I have begun to think along those lines myself. I have two pre-64 94, one in .32 Win Special, and the other in .30-30. The .32 already has a very high quality vintage Lyman peep sight on it, but the .30-30 only has the original open sights. It might be a serious candidate for a scout style scope in combination with the new Hornady Leverevolution loadings.

I have a Winchester 94 Packer model in 30-30 that was modifed to be a scout rifle. The previous owner did all the work on it and IMO he did a good job on it. He installed the XS scout mount with Burris 2.75 scout scope and the XS front-ghostring combo. He also coated the entire thing in a dark gray laquer finish from Brownells. It was a good package all around. I replaced the old rings it came with for Leupold quick release rings just in case I wanted to in the field.

Here are some of my observations. Even with the low Leupold rings, my cheek weld is a little high. You need to get used to it but once you do, it is very quick on target. The 94 shoulders very nicely and it is very light to carry in the field. The Win 94 I have is an Angle Eject but a true side ejection rifle like a Marlin would probably better. Personally, it didn't bug me. I did find that I like the Packer model better because of the grip. The regular Win 94s have a straight grip. Accuracy was decent but not outstanding. I'm used to getting .5 or less MOA with my Rem 700 308 5-R at 100 yards. It could be just me not being used to the Win 94 as I am with the Rem 700.

The only bad thing I can think of is that during the later hours of the day and near dusk, the scout scope does not work so well. It didn't gather enough light for it to be really useful.

LT, I can tell you how to improve your 94's accuracy at the bench. Don't rest it on the forward stock, but instead rest it on the receiver only. Then you will see what it's true accuracy potential is. Try it.

Winchester's website shows a nice pic of the XS mount. They have a trapper scout model that comes with the mount and XS ghost ring sites.
