So I'm picking up a used Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle in .308. The scope currently mounted is a Burris, but not a Scout Scope, yet mounted on the forward rail. It's so far back, and lowlthat it interferes with ejection.
In any event, I'm looking at Scout Scopes. I think I like the Leupold FX II 2.5X28.. Anyone have experience with this scope, or have others they'd recommend?
Thanks

I have one of the Leopold fixed 2.5x28 IER scopes. It's in QD mounts on my Marlin 336BL. I haven't done a lot of shooting with it and no hunting use, but I do have some thoughts.

1) I like the eye relief. Having the ocular bell of the scope way away from my face makes me very happy.

2) It seems really easy to use for someone used to shooting with both eyes open. I find I don't have to search for the crosshairs or sight picture. Throw rifle to shoulder, there's what I need to see.

3) The glass reflects a lot of glare. Or seems to. It might be just my scope (it was used), but there's no way I can forget I'm looking through a couple pieces of glass when using mine. And I have a Leupold FX-II 2.5x20mm and a 4x33mm too. Both are visually far superior.

I won't say don't bother try the forward mounted Scout scope concept. But I won't go down the rabbit hole of diehard belief either. I liken it to a modern red dot sight. For where it fits, it works great. Just accept it won't work great everywhere.

(I do find it superior to iron sights. My eyes have begun to age quickly in the last couple of years and I now have a rather large assortment of scopes relative to the number of rifles I own.)

I have the same Leupold Scout Scope. I use it on a Garand! I tried a Nikon 2.5-8x handgun scope but the higher magnifications aren’t very useful in a scout position. The fixed 2.5 is a good alternative to irons with a touch of magnification. Works well.

Some scout scopes to consider:

Burris Scout 2-7x32
Burris Scout 2.75x20
Leupold VX-R Scout 1.5-5x33
Leupold VX-Freedom Scout 1.5-4x28
Leupold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28
Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 Scout
