Scratched Gun

I have the same feeling the OP has when I buy a brand new car or truck. That first ding is the worst, after that, the other dings don't seem to bother me as much. When I was young, I washed my cars nearly daily (even if they were clean). Anymore, I might wash my work truck or wife's car once every six months. Sometimes, when her car is really dirty from driving the unpaved roads, I will keep it out of the garage during some heavy rains. That seems to clean it as good as we need it to get from here to town and back.

Now, if I am going to be driving to California and back, or driving to Alaska, I might want to clean the vehicle up a bit more just so we can see everything out of all the windows!

Birchwood Casey makes a instant touch up pen in flat black and glossy black that works pretty good. But you should see my AR-15 it would take a case of the touch up pens to work on it. Me and the Bushmaster have been through a lot together.

I bought my first "plastic" handgun, Glock g23 a few weeks ago and after field stripping to clean and lube before trying it out noticed the obvious hole behind the mag. I looked it up, found I could buy a "slug plug" to stop up the stupid hole. Bought one, installed it and fumbled the pistol dropping it on the floor. It hit on the corner of the grip and broke the new slug plug. I am in the process of repeatedly kicking myself daily. As I don't own any newer firearms with locks, buttons to push, safeties for safeties it just isn't the same as a 1911 or revolvers I carry so back to my older 45s or J frame Smiths.

That plug is actually a bad idea, they trap powder residue and water inside your frame. If you ever removed one from a gun that has actually been used alot you will see why. Powder residue, water, and dirt will CAKE inside the grip. I dont believe that it will cause any issues with a glock but I dont like the idea of hoarding dirt.

A buddy of mine is real anal about his guns like the OP is, he had one of those butt plugs in his glock for a couple years. When he finally removed it it was NASTY in there.

Now, I am not against the idea of plugging that hole but the butt plug is not the best idea because nobody ever cleans the inside of the frame. I shove a set of those foam ear plugs up in mine, really comes in handy when you forget your ears or want to do some spur of the moment shooting. When I clean it I just toss the ear plugs, wipe it clean, and then throw a new set up there.
