Just bought a P11... love the pistol!

I field striped it, cleaned it up, rem oil lube and decided to cycle a few rounds through it to test the action (I know this is not the safest thing to do) anyways....

I could easily load the first round...

ejecting that round was super tough.. Meaining i had to use alot of force. all were extremely tough to eject. Kinda felt like the barrel was jamed up but then would eject as i applied more force. It cycled the rounds, it just took some muscle. Not planning on cycling anymore but am going to the range tomarrow.... I did some research and found little on the subject.

I did notice scratches on the brass casings.. i also noticed i picked up some 124 gr Nato rounds.... (on my original post i stated 147gr Nato rounds)... from what i read they have a slightly thicker casing.. the p-11 is chambered for 9mm luger

Is this normal for a kel tech p11?
Do i need to break it in a bit?
i am going to get some regular 9mm and see what happens

Sometimes there is simply not enough room to accommodate loaded rounds when cycling the slide. Not sure if that's the problem or not, just a thought.

I have worked on/own(ed) numerous KelTecs in various models. The P11 is one of the "OK" KelTecs IMHO.....

I have yet to find a P11 that will digest anything over 115g worth a spit. Just will not do it.
The bottom line on these KelTecs is the manufacturing tolerances are so loose you will find some that will and many that wont. So before anybody jumps on here with "I shot a kabillion rounds of 147g" let me reiterate the tolerances are all over the plate with KelTecs and I am speaking from a general perspective/observation.

Try 115g rounds friend.

I've shot 2000+ rounds of 115gr PMC and Hornady Critical Defense through mine without a single malfunction. I bought about 500 rounds of 124gr HST and have yet to test it. Since the P11 isn't rated for a steady diet of +P I won't even shoot 147gr standard pressure through mine... but I'm often overly cautious.

Are those Winchester NATO rounds you have?

ETA: You may want to forego your trip to the range until you can try some other ammo. It would be a real shame to lose a finger or eye due to either out-of-spec ammo or chamber machining. Just one possible concern is over-pressure.

Yes, winchester nato.... after reading the box again they are 124gr nato rounds.. sorry for getting it wrong.

I picked up some 115gr fmps and they shot fine... will slowly work my way up to the 124

Is anyone having issues with Nato's in Kel tecs... i understand they are a +p round... just checking to see if anyone has shot them consistantly.

Good info!!! Much appreciated...

I don't know if it's the ammo but there have been many complaints about Winchester over the last several months. I won't buy the stuff.

My p11 seems to take a little more effort to get the slide to start moving than it does to move the slide when cycling by hand. It seems that the effort is used to unlock the barrel/slide lockup as after the barrel moves down the effort need is less. Mine also shoots really low but is dead on left to right.

I ran some 800 grit sand paper lightly around the edges..Ran some 124 gr REM golden sabers through and and no scraches on the cassing.... I think it just needs some beak in

thx

Scratches on casings can also be from the magazine.

Wait, so do you mean that you actually fired it? If not, you probably shouldn't sand gun parts until you have.

Also, you really should take it easy on the NATO rounds. NATO 9mm is loaded maybe 10% spicier than ordinary ammo. As I don't believe your pistol is rated for +P ammo, it may produce disproportionate wear. This likely isn't worthwhile since it's only ball ammo.

UPDATE

today it ate 250 rounds of 5 different bullets from 115gr to 124 nato

some brands more accurate than others

the 115gr XTPs were dead on accurate.

the gun works flawlessly...

thanks for the input!

Glad to hear you got your pistol squared away. You took your time and used your brain and hands to deal with a problem instead of boxing it up and sending it back to the manufacturer. I commend you for your efforts and wager you feel pretty good about your problem solving skills....:)
