What, if any, training and classes are you all attending in the near future?

I just signed up for a Pistol Basics class in March at a reputable facility. I AM SO EXCITED!!!

just a C&P from my post here, go there for links that are absent here. Unfortunately the Crazy Monkey Defense class was canceled.

Crazy Monkey Defense seminar with Cecil Burch, February 11-12, Greenville SC. This is a boxing system designed for street and MMA use, and integrates very well with a lot of modern shooting and grappling styles. If you can't take the seminar (it's only $150 a person!) be sure to pick up the CMD Championship Series 1 DVD. Email [email protected] for more details. Paypal payment to that email to sign up but confirm open slots first...

Dynamic Marksmanship with Tom Givens, March 10-11, Florence, SC. Info here.

Armed Movement in Structures with Southnarc, through Tom Givens at Rangemaster in Memphis, TN, April 28-29. Contact Tom (go to Rangemaster for his email) to sign up. Must-have for anyone who carries a gun and lives in, moves within, or finds themselves entering or exiting structures (being slightly facetious here - it's a must-have for people who have a gun and want to be effective inside of structures).

Extreme Close Quarters Concepts with Southnarc through Grey Group in Carthage NC, June 1-3. This is the class pictured in the video in the post a few posts below this. Must-have for anyone who carries a gun.

Aim Fast Hit Fast with Todd Green of pistol-training.com: Tentative but hopeful for sometime between June and September. Todd's accessible (to Georgians) classes are all booked up but I am hoping he has time to do a class in the Sandy Springs area for SS-tac. Stay tuned.

Vehicle Combatives and Shooting Tactics with Southnarc, also through Grey Group, in Carthage, NC, September 28-30. Pre-req is ECQC. Must-have for anyone who carries a gun and rides in vehicles.

Also hope to schedule in something in Atlanta that I will host, with: Adam and Rory Singer (grappling stuff for street), and Paul Gomez (Handling Traumatic Injuries and Robust Pistol Manipulations)

Next up for me is 2 days in March with Michael Janich studying his MBC (martial blade concepts) POI. After that maybe a refresher course on something I've taken previously at my friendly local facility, then hopefully John Farnam in August, time and money permitting.

^^^Very cool. Mind if I pick your brain a little in early March for input/ideas on how to best maximize the experience, since you'll be fresh off the mat?

I've done an MBC/CBC seminar with Janich, as well, and train periodically with one of his certified instructors (going tonight, in fact:)). I'm also happy to try to answer any questions.

OP: The only class I've actually got a deposit out for at this point is Shivworks EWO in June. Lots of other possibilities floating around in the calendar, but still nothing else set.

Where are you taking your Pistol Basics class?

At Center Target in ID

^^^OK, then, I will start the sharing. CTS is where I am taking the Janich course, and I have taken much of what they offer, outside of low-light and carbine.

Ed is an *excellent* instructor, and this coming from a guy who's been under the watchful eyes of guys like Mas Ayoob and Greg Hamilton (who are also absolutely fantastic, mind).

You will not want to stop after basic, believe me. You will want to take Def-1 (and retake it over and over, since retakes are free)

The facility is great–this is the place voted best range in America at both shot show 2010 and by Glock shooting sport foundation, same year. There are reasons for that, and the training is definitely one of the big ones.

Any questions about CTS, just ask. I really dig that place.

Thanks Bix. Main question: what items would you absolutely recommend having for class outside of the typical notebook, water, eye pro, EDC folder and duplicate safe trainer? That much I've got, but any tips on how to maximize the investment would be great. Forewarned/forearmed, and all that. I'm reluctant to ask about any mental/physical prep, since that sort of thing is why I'm taking the class, but what the heck, if you have thoughts there, fine by me as well.

Thanks again in advance. Fun thread!

I took the Refuse to Be a Victim class from Peggy last week; I wanted to scope the place out before I went to a shooting class. It is a neat facility and they are very professional.

Your list is good. In addition to those items, I brought a small trauma kit and a forearm protector - but did not need either.

A forearm pad will diffuse some of the impact of your partner's training blade against one of the common MBC targets. It's certainly not necessary - most folks at my seminar did not have them - but it can be helpful when (i) you're doing a lot of reps in practice or (ii) you have a particularly enthauasitc parnter :D.

I believe Janich recommends one of the McDavid thigh wraps for this purpose. I just use a neoprene shin sleeve I picked up cheap.

Ah ha... a forearm pad. That is exactly the sort of thing that I did not consider, so I am glad you brought it up. Thanks for the input, I sincerely appreciate it.

McDavid Thigh Wrap...sorry I didn't bring it up...Model 487R. Got mine from Amazon along with my Spyderco Endura trainer (why is their trainer more expensive than anyone elses?). I'd also recommend eye protection that breathes, ones that don't quickly get fogged up when you start working with the trainer

I'm going to Chris Costa's Handgun level II class in Portland, OR at the end of May. Not much else on my dance-card, unless my local range offers Urban Carbine classes this summer.

Really well, the bruising is fading nicely

I don't think you'll have time to take notes. The only guy who was successful at taking useful notes was an professional cartoonist who mostly did drawings during the lecture and nothing through the exercises.

I'd advise doing some stretching in the morning, taking some Mortrin before and after class, and planning on spending some time in the whirlpool at the hotel during the evening.

Go to class with an open mind and be ready for most of your beliefs about encounters with a knife to be shaken

I went to a skills development match at the local range last weekend. First time in the box, making ready, drawing and reloading while timed, etc, etc. I think I did pretty well, but I am eager to see the difference after a formal day-long class. I almost didn't go to the range match because I wanted to get more shooting time so I wouldn't feel silly but then I realized I would have a before and after comparison so I went. The match director and RO's were very helpful with the three of us who were beginners at competitive shooting. I am hooked!

All settled in at the hotel by the training center. It would have only been a couple hour drive up in the morning, but the road tends to be icy, so we made it a family thing and my guys are going to hit the pull and save and movie theater while I'm in the class. They'll probably come shoot a little if there are lanes open, too. I brought the revolver up in case they want to. So excited! Yep, I'm pretty uncomplicated :D

Basic Pistol I at Center Target Sports in Post Falls ID

We spent four hours in the classroom and four hours on the indoor range. The instructor was Ken, a retired police officer and department trainer. The course was geared toward people who have never shot a gun before in their lives. Most of the classroom info was review but still worthwhile. Sometimes the first time you hear something you miss a lot of the meaning because you don't know the context or what questions to ask. We covered safety, types and function of handguns, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, storage and a quick bit on self defense (shooting someone, even righteously, can screw up your life, so be smart).

The range part, after lunch, was in a section of lanes that is separated from the rest of the range, so that we could stop and listen to the instructor without interference. We started shooting at a dot on paper at 6 feet and moved in increments to 75 feet, using different targets and with constant feedback from the instructor who was EXCELLENT. The people who did the best were two 50+ year old women who had never fired a gun in their lives.

I definitely improved throughout the afternoon and got back on track for stance. My grip, trigger control, breath control and sight picture are pretty good but I was way too tense through the shoulders and neck and fatiguing easily when I shot previously. Halfway through the afternoon my eye went all wiggly on me and wouldn't even focus on the front sight, but we took a break and when we went back I was better and finished the rest of the day strong.

My best shooting was during a drill where he started man shaped targets at 75 feet and then brought them back at full speed with us shooting until they stopped. I did way better at that than shooting at a stationary target closer in; go figure. The other drills that I performed well involved shooting quickly.

I give the course an A+ and myself a B+.

I just finished up Defensive Pistol Skills 1 last month and I've got the following scheduled with KR training in the Austin TX area:
- Defensive Pistol Skills 2 later this month
- Defensive Pistol Skills 3 in May
- Handgunning: Beyond the Basics in April.

Aside from my CHL, DPS1 was the first training I've had.
Looking forward to getting some training from Paul Gomez and/or Suarez International this year or next.
