Sean Penn’s Downtown Lunch Marred by Car, Gun Theft

By NATE TABAK
Daily Cal Staff Writer
Wednesday, April 9, 2003

Actor Sean Penn's car was stolen as he lunched at a Downtown Berkeley restaurant yesterday afternoon, police said.

The car, a black 1987 Buick Grand National, was taken in broad daylight between 1 and 2:45 p.m. while it was parked on the 2300 block of Shattuck Avenue, said Berkeley police Officer Mary Kusmiss.

"It was quite bold," Kusmiss said.

Penn, 42, told police he had a loaded 9 mm Glock handgun inside his car in addition to an unloaded .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver in the trunk.

It was legal for Penn to have the guns in his car because he has a state concealed weapons permit, Kusmiss said.

An officer remembered seeing the car heading south on Shattuck from Derby Street about 2:35 p.m before Penn reported the theft, Kusmiss said.

Penn was eating lunch at Venus restaurant with his assistant when the theft occurred.

The actor was "very mellow" in the aftermath of the crime, Kusmiss said.

Penn declined to comment about the incident.

"I'm not talking. I'm just having a cigarette," Penn told The Daily Californian.

About 70 percent of cars stolen in Berkeley are eventually found.

Kusmiss said Penn's car may turn up sooner than others because it is a distinctive model that is "highly visible."

Penn, who lives in Marin County, is a three-time Academy Award nominee for Best Actor.

His car has a California license plate of 2GRS995.

Now isn't that interesting!!
You don't suppose he's one of those elite that has a coveted
California CCW?

at a Downtown Berkeley

But wait!! That's about as liberal of a place as it gets!! THERE'S NO CRIME in Berkeley!!

Also, Sean Penn; I thought all of Hollyweird is against guns!! and a ccw at that!!

QUESTION:

What is the gun doing in the car and not on his persons if he has a ccw??

I just don't understand what the problem is...isn't it apparent that Hollyweirders like Penn should not be subject to the "laws" governing his fellow subjects in the PRK?

Hypocricy abounds. But, on a more positive note the Buick Grand National is a pretty cool ride.

Doesn't Sean Penn have a domestic violence conviction for banging up Madonna? I guess Lautenberg only applies to the great unwashed. :barf:

Jeff

I think that his domestic violence rap was on the photographer that captured it for all eternity - Steve Dallas wasn't it. :D

Greg

As the article said,he has a house in Marin, which is true.
A lot of the hollywood elite have houses here.
I'm not sure if its his primary residence.
In Marin county its almost,no it is,impossible to get a ccw.
I called the sherrifs dept. and asked, the woman that answered
laughed at me!I'm not kidding!
But oh wait,I'm not a hollywood liberal.

Damned if I know which agency did this. But trust me, I'll find out!

Greg L,
Well unless he lived with the photographer, it wouldn't be domestic battery. But it sure should have been grounds to deny a CCW.

Jeff

hypocrites

And I'll bet his '87 ride - cool as it is - gets lousier gas mileage then my 2000 SUV... Oops, I forgot, he's not a "little people".

As much as I am a fan of the Grand National, why in the hell is Sean Penn, worth millions, driving around in one??? If it were me, I could think of 50 other cars I'd rather drive.

You don't leave any gun in a parked car...or at least any gun you want to keep.

IDIOTA ! ! ! :cuss:

Don't ask me how I know this fact....suffice to say I learned it the hard way with some great measure of assistance by the then-wife.

Jeff,

The refrence was from the Bloom County comic strip that was lampooning the Sean/Madonna brawls. :D Steve got beat up while Opus got out of the way. He wound up suing the camera company because obviously  they were responsible for him getting beat up (and they had the deepest pockets....)

Greg

Too bad Sean wasn't in the bunker they blew up a few days ago when they thought his hero Saddam was there.

At least the car was a Grand National and not a GNX.

I think I'd cry if someone was driving my GNX around trashing it.

Wow, a Hollywood actor driving a Grand National! With his kind of money he could be driving around something a bit more expensive!

At least the car was a Grand National and not a GNX.

What makes you think it wasn't?

1987 was the only year for GNX's, IIRC.

The media isn't known for their great facts-checking ("semi-automatic revolver" sound familiar? Doubt they were talking about Webley-Fosbury or Mateba, either).

So comrade Penn may have lost an irreplaceable $50K and climbing vehicle along with his two guns. No problem about the guns because I'm sure they had trigger locks.

 :barf:
