So I picked up a project shotgun from a yardsale for $20. I didn't spend a lot of time looking it over, but could tell it would need some work. From the quick glance I took at it, I thought it just needed cleaned up and needed a forend. I was looking at a lot of other stuff at the same time, so I didn't really give it a very good once over.

Now I know the gun is not worth much, but I figured if I could find a forend on ebay, clean the gun up and get it in shooting condition, I wouldn't be too bad off and at worst, have what it is worth in it.

I went ahead and ordered the forend, unfortunately, I had to get a repop to the tune of $70 because I couldn't find a good used one. Well a few nights ago I set to taking the gun apart and cleaning it up in my ultrasonic cleaner. While disassembling I discovered the trigger guard was homemade and the hammer spur was broken off. I also noticed the stock that was on it was not original and one somebody made to fit the gun. It is a decent fit up, so I will try to make it work. I found a used trigger setup with trigger guard on ebay and ordered it for $20. Already I am over the guns value.

I then took the internals out and saw that the previous owner made a locking bolt for the gun from a scrap of steel. I didn't realize it at first because I have never messed with one of these before, so it just seemed like a poor machining job. It wasn't until I started researching it a bit more that I figured out it was not a real part.

So my question is, can anybody tell me which locking bolt should go on this gun? I see two different types, and since I don't have the original to go off of, I am just guessing.

I know I will be way more into the gun then it is worth, but at this point it would be a waste to not finish it and get it operational again.

Here are the two different ones I am finding.

Nobody? I'm thinking about ordering the hook style figuring worst case scenario, I could grind the hook off and make the second style if needed. Thoughts?

The Blue Book of Gun Values list the manufacturer for a Sear 101.40 as either Springfield 947 or Savage 940. I would look at Numrich for a schematic to see which is the correct locking bolt.

ETA: looks like the correct bolt is the one with the hook. $36 change
