Hello everyone...I have a question about my Mossberg shotgun

It is a model 500A, I recently bought a Hogue stock and forend for it, the stock fit like a glove...but the whwn I went to put the forend on, I couldn't. The forend that came with the gun is almost like the Maverick 88 style, where the action bars are attached tto the forend. I bought a slide action assembly off of ebay so that I could install the hogue. When I installed the slide action assembly and reassembled, I tried to cycle a round from the magazine tube, but it would not engage the shell release. After further investigation the action arms on the slide tube assembly are to long, and they do not engage the shell release.

I am wondering if I will be able to find a slide action asembly to make my gun function properly? Or am I going to have to just be happy with the stock forend.

Thanks for your help.

There are two different action lengths for Mossberg 500s. I think it depends on when the gun was made. If you look up the action parts at Numrich or Havlin's, they come in either 6 5/8" or 7 5/8". It sounds to me like you bought the wrong one. I believe the older guns have the longer action.

If you have a newer 500, I'm not sure why the Hogue forend wouldn't fit. Is it possible that it's for the 590 and not the 500? I'm just guessing here. A phone call to Hogue might get you some answers.

Good luck. Hope you get it working for you.

That brings up another question. I have a very old Mossberg 500 and I was thinking of buying a rifled, sighted slug barrel for it. Does anyone know if there are any dimensional differences which would prevent the use of a modern slug (or any other modern barrel) on it?

I was thinking of writing to Mossberg on this question, but since this subject came up here, I figured I'd see if any THR-er had an answer offhand.

I wouldn't, and didn't buy a rifled barrel for my 500a. I went with a smooth bore so I could shoot cheap rifled slugs, or expensive ones, and shoot buckshot through it without leading the barrel. At 100yds I don't have a problem putting slugs in the zero zone of an IDPA target.

Just my opinion of course, and worth what you paid for it........

I have a 500 built in 1966, 12 ga., full choke. I bought a Mossberg 18" smooth, rifle sighted slug barrel in about 1992 from Gander Mountain for $65.00. I cast the Lyman sabot style slug and load it in 2 3/4" hulls over unique and with a good rest it will stay inside 6" at a hundred yards. My brother has taken several white tail deer with it.

MMCSRET, that sounds like mine. Do you have that hokey rolled scrollwork on the shell elevator in the ejection port?

I was thinking in terms of gaining more confidence in shot placement with the sights on a rifled slug barrel, and to me accuracy is paramount.

How big is the zero zone of your IDPA target, donkee?

ANd my main question is still will a modern rifled barrel fit on that old a 500?

The zero is 8". With cheepie Winchester rifled slugs, the groups are around 1/2 of that as I recall, been a while since I shot it. I have switched over to my Win 1400 EBS (Evil Black Shotgun). I changed the sights on the 500a and need to go back out to sight it in. I can get you actual groups when I do it. I just am waiting for the weather to warm up a bit here in mid MI.

OK, thanks, both of you.

Yeah, it's stamped-in to look like engine turning. No complaints about performace, though.
