i have a sears branded savage 187a .22lr that short cycles. it shoots and cycles back far enough to almost reset the striker assembly, then goes forward. any help would be great.

Are you using full power ammo like CCI mini-mags or ammo that has 1200+ FPS rating. Subsonic ammo often won't cycle the action. Have you removed the spring plug and components, and cleaned and oiled the internals?
There are a lot of things going on in those actions when fired, and any worn part can slow down the action. I believe that an inspection and cleaning and using the correct ammo will get it back in action again.

i've had it apart and cleaned and oiled it good, was very dirty when i got it. i've tried remington golden, cci blazer, federal bulk, and they all act the same. it seams to stop just before the striker catches, which is also just short of another round being lifted enough to chamber.

Is it doing this in an attempt to rapid fire the gun? I ask because the 187 was NOT meant for rapid fire.
In operation, when you fire it the bolt goes rearward, and is held back until you release the trigger. This allows sufficient time for the next round to feed out of the magazine and the lifter to do its thing.
Also, make sure that the bolt handle is pulled out all the way.

Savage had something of a turkey with this one. They tried for years to get it to work right, that's why you'll see 187's all the way to series TS, stopping at every letter in between. It was supposed to cycle shorts, long and LR interchangeably, but never did.
