Hello all,

I have an RCBS bullet seating die that just recently started leaving two little rings on my bullets. I wouldn't care, but the aren't superficial. I can run my finger nail along the bullet and they snag.

What's going on and what should I do?

Thanks for the help

Chuck the seating stem in a drill, drill press, etc, slightly round the sharp leading edge of the seater stem and polish. This usually gets rid of the mark.

I think you can order different profiles of seater die stems to match bullet shape.some of my dies came with 2 profiles 1 rounded and 1 for swc.

Like Walkalong said, you need to take the sharp corner off the seater. I had the problem with 380 LRN. I put a stone in a Dremel. RCBS says they will fix the problem if you send the seater and some bullets, but they charge for the service.

Is there a reason it didn't do it for the first five hundred or so rounds but in the last twenty has? It seems like if it were rough edges it would've been doing it the entire time.

Thanks, I'll give it a try

Probably for whatever reason, something in your latest batch is taking more pressure to seat the bullets.

*Work hardened brass from several reloading cycles?
*Different brand of brass, or from a different lot?
*Not flairing as much, if you are talking about pistol bullets?
*Different bullet brand or nose shape?

Hardened brass I'll believe. They are on their 8th load or so, that makes sense.

Thanks again

I had this problem too...

I posted a few weeks ago with the exact same problem with my 308 RCBS seating die (I also posted pics). I used some 0000 steel wool wrapped around a Dremmel conical stone bit. I didn't grind anything with the stone bit, I just used it to hold the steel wool and to give it some RPM's (~4000). Polished it out beautifully.

If you wanted to take it to the next level. Use a good lapping compound and some of the actual bullets you want to load to lap the seater plug to the shape of the bullet.:D
