Hey guys, I have a question about seater plugs. I have a carbide RCBS 3-die set with TC for my 40S&W. My first set of bullets were Rainier 180grain plated TC. I have some lasercast that I want to use in a 170grain SWC. Now will the same seater plug work for all bullets or does the bullet shape require different plugs. I found some differnt plugs on midways website but not a large selection.

Thanks, Jay

The TC stands for truncated cone right?? If so, I would think the profile of a SWC is not too far off from that and would work. You see the difference more from a round nose to a flat tip type of a design.

Pull the seater plug out of your seating die and check it against the profile of the new bullet you're going to load. It it's close, it will probably work ok. RCBS makes special seating plugs for Speer Gold Dot bullets for their pistol dies, but that's about all that's available for special bullets.

You can also make seater plugs to fit a particular bullet with some epoxy. I've done this on a rare occasion for a special bullet and load, but it usually isn't necessary.

Generally, seater plugs come in flat and round nose for pistol rounds, which will cover most bullets. The best way to find out if your die will work with the new bullet is to seat one and see if there is any deformation. If there is, then you move to plan B, and get another seater plug.

Hope this helps.

Fred
