I have searched and researched on grips for these. I know the 150 series have different grips and aftermarket are hard to find. I read in a couple of places that the 151 series Pachmyar 3175 grips will fit the 150's with some modifications (read dremel). Does anyone have a 150 series where they have done this where they would be willing to share some pictures and details on where the modifications were made and whether or not you would recommend doing this?

Thanks

I have wanted a 150 series for some time now. I often see vintage 150 series aftermarket grips on gunbroker. It's pretty often that used and new-old-stock Jay Scott and Herret's are auctioned. I'm pretty sure Herret's can craft a set that will do justice to such a fine revolver. I plan on acquiring at least one 150 series to join my small gathering of six 151+ series revolvers.

While I really like the later sixes, the 6" 150 series I fondled at a show seemed to have a magical balance when my checkbook did not.

Please don't dremel a classic. I and many others would probably be willing to trade you a newer six for your 150 series.

I was NOT going to Dremel the pistol, but the grips. I ordered the Pachmayr 3175 grips. I found a couple of places that indicate these will fit if I remove the grip dowels. There will be a small gap around the front and back of the neck, but I can live with that. Herret will make some custom grips, but they are pricey. I will post some pics when I have the on. I should have both the grips and six by the first week of September. I may take a stab at making my own custom grips later using the factory grips for the internal grip dimensions.

I'm curious what you end up with. I asked this question once a Ruger forum some years ago for my 150- security six because I cannot work those factory grips to save my life. It has the finest trigger and action I've ever felt on any Ruger but the gun is almost too nice to use. I don't know if the early models are supposed to be smoother than the later ones but I've wanted a beater version ever since.

Well, After a Hospital stay and some recuperation, I was finally able to get the new to me Security Six to the range after changing the grips. It is a 3 1/4 inch 150 series and I put the Pachmayr 3175 grips on it. The grip fits really well. There is some additional material (pic below) where the web of your hand goes. I suppose you could cut/grind it away, but it does not bother me at all - I actually like the additional real estate. This thing shoots great and the grips really absorb the recoil. So, if you are looking for grips for your 150 series Security Six/Speed Six, I can recommend these grips without reservation.

Looks like you could trim those down a bit without much trouble.

Yeah, a Dremel or an Exacto knife could trim that down, but I actually like having the additional real-estate there. I am just happy to find that these grips work as the small wood grips that were on there just did not fit my hand. They were kind of like the Colt grips on the Model 357 - Just too small. This grip fits my hand really well. I would say it is on par with the Hogue Monogrip I have on my Colt. In addition to fitting the hand well, it helps with recoil on heavier loads.

I just bought a 150 series security six this Sunday! And was dismayed to find the same problem with locating aftermarket grips. I've ordered a pachmyr set and it should be showing up next week. I love this little tank but it's a bit sharp under heavy 357 loads with that narrow wooden grip. Tolerable, but not ideal. And my large hands find the grip hard to hold consistently, though that may be a matter of practice

I think you will like these. They really tame the full house loads compared to the original wooden grips.
