Where they tell me to go
Guys,
I'm looking at a base gun to do some custom work on to ulimately be my woods revolver.

What are the real differences between the Security Six and the GP100's. Are they equally strong? I don't want the full lug that the 100 has and am leaning towards a SS for that reason. I do want it to be able to handle the very hot Buffalo Bullet and Garrett type of ammo also.

Inputs and advice would be great.

I personally like the 6 better....but..if you plan on shooting hot loads alot, the GP is the best bet. It's bigger and stronger.Alos, the 6's aren't made anymore,so possibly custom work on the GP could be done easier(?).
Tere are ammo manufacturers that use GP's to test their hot loads.
My 1st handgun was a 6"GP..one of the most accurate gun I ever shot.
GET BOTH>>>>>everybody wins.

GP100 is stronger...

I don't own a security six, but I know that they don't have the triple locking cylinder. That makes the gun weaker than the GP100. The security six does, however, have a solid frame.

Security Sixs are nice guns, but I bought a GP100. The triple locking cylinder and the GP100 grip "stud" made the GP100 more attractive to me. I also am not sure if the Security Six's trigger mechanism uses one or two springs. If the mechanism has only one spring, you will not be able to get as nice of a trigger as you would with a GP100. Alot of the nonsense that you hear about Rugers having horrible triggers came from the older one spring models. Any two spring Ruger DA revolver (GP100, SP101, Super Redhawk), with a little work, can have triggers equal to any smith and wesson. If you lighten up a single spring Ruger DA revolver too much, you'll get light strikes that won't ignite the primer.

You can definitely get a nice trigger on a Six. I bought mine used, so I don't know what if anything was done to it, but it has the nicest trigger of any of my rugers. That being said though, I don't think you can go wrong with either. The GP100 is probably going to be a bit more versatile for you. The biggest difference is in the grip style, I would hold one of each and see which feels better.

i had a sucurity six, it had the WORST trigger of any gun i have ever owned. i bought it used, so i dont know what, if anything had ever been done to the gun. if you dont like the full lug under the barrel of the gp100, have it milled off, and blend it into the barrel. you should be able to have that done for a reasonable cost. you are going to customize the gun anyway, so it is only one more step in the process.

My security 6 was a hand me down from my Father and the trigger has had work done and is SWEET....even die hard smith guys are impressed....and I haven't had any light strikes...not sure exactly what was done to it,it was when I was kid...but it is awesome.
